Laptop Issues/ Data Recovery Questions
DD dropped my laptop and the screen has a wonderful rainbow display on it now and is completely not functioning. Took it to someone to take a look at it and they told me that they could fix the issue and clean up the computer so that it is as good as new.. for $250 . I figured that I would just get a new laptop for that amount since my laptop is fairly old and I just want the photos and docs I have on it really-- so I just asked that they just remove the data to an external drive.. apparently the cost for that is 250 also (not inc. the cost of the external drive)..
Just curious if anyone had this issue before and if they went about it a different way-- also the cost of the data recovery seems high to me.. anyone klnow what the "going rate " is. I only have a few photos and docs on it-- not a ton but id hate to lose them.

Nevermind I didn't see the part where you said the screen isn't functioning at all.
That does sound a bit high- I'd shop around.

Re: Laptop Issues/ Data Recovery Questions
That's not "data recovery". All they are going to do is take it in the back room, plug an external monitor to it, boot up the computer like normal, and copy the files to an external drive. It's only a few minutes worth of effort. If you have a lot of data, it may take a while to copy everything, but that's computer time, not person time. If the computer isn't working, they can just unplug the drive and plug it into another computer to copy the data. Again, not a big deal.
If you have a monitor, or even a TV with compatible ports, you can still use your laptop, most likely.

exactly...those people have nerve. you can even buy a USB transfer cable and plug in both laptops and transfer your files.
