Fund raising for a sick friend

I have a close friend who was just diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. With her clearance, a bunch of friends are looking to try and raise some funds for her medical expenses.

So I'm looking for some fundraising ideas other than just a Gofundme or caringbridge. Has anyone been part of a successful fundraiser or have any ideas?

I'm sorry to hear about your friend Chat Icon

When I was sick, a bunch of my friends from here/LIW held an online bake sale to raise money for me (still think about their generosity every day <3)

Re: Fund raising for a sick friend

I'm in the process of hosting a 5k to raise funds for a charity that my family is involved with. It's a decent amount of work, but I feel like I have the potential to raise a good amount to donate. Ive also been getting donations from businesses etc and I told them anything over $100 donation, their names will go on all the tshirts. We've raised over $1000 in two months so far. I'm going all out with the 5k, but I actually attended one for a child with cancer once. They did it very simple and was able to have sizeable donation for the child. Fm me if you need any details

When my ex was hurt a friend held a fundraiser and he sold 50/50 raffles. That brought in a lot of money.

Another idea is getting a pair of concert or broadway show tickets and raffle them off.

Chinese auctions. But you will need donated items.

I would still consider doing a website as well. A friend of mine was hurt in a bad car accident last week. His family started a fundraiser on youcaring.com & is already up to almost $4000 in just a few days.

Re: Fund raising for a sick friend

I don't usually say anything on posts like this because I do not want to discourage people from helping and I do not want to sound like a naysayer. However, someone should have a conversation with the person who is ill and ask whether the person is seeking SSI or Medicaid. If so, the fundraiser could hinder their eligibility for those benefits. It's a murky area, legally. I think that with any fundraiser nowadays, the most successful ones are the ones where people either know each other or have a way to make sure that it's legitimate. There are many articles about the SSI and Medicaid issue but here are two.

Re: Fund raising for a sick friend

I had a party in my yard for a friend of mine who just got diagnosed with ms

I had all kinds of reps here. Scenty. Pampered chef. Passion party. Origami owl (this was a couple years ago)

Now you could do those leggings etc

Anyways. Everyone came and shopped and the people donated half their commission

I also made up baskets to Chinese raffle off and reached out to vendors I knew (photo, makeup etc) and they donated gift cards

Was great

Thank you everyone. It has been discussed with the person that is ill, otherwise I would not go ahead with it. I really like some of the ideas posted and will run them by the group that helping me.

We did a pasta night at a local firehouse. A few people went around to some local restaurants asking for donations and others chipped in to create pasta dishes. We also raffles off gift baskets.
