why does childcare cost more than college?

why do parents pay $$$ for private education then cut them off at 18, leaving kids with debt when they graduate? Wouldnt it make more financial sense to go to public school and have parents pay for college?

just random thoughts.

I feel like kids are much more responsible in college if they are on the line financially. I have no intentions of paying for my children’s college education. I may consider helping them pay for it after they graduate, depending on how they did.

I guess if the public school stinks...also you might want to surround your kid around "fancy people" to build their "network" young (someone once told me that, it made sense I guess).

Teach them the importance of investing in themselves?

Too many different situations to generalize, but I don't think it's common practice.

i agree with you. i want dd to go to public through 8th grade, then if I feel that the public school isn't the best environment for her, I would like to send her to a good catholic high school and pay for her college. I went to catholic HS, and felt like alot of my college courses were easier than many of my classes in HS. My personal opinion is that catholic elem. school is solely for the purpose of building the religious foundation for your child. I do not think it is worth the $$ educationally. I know firsthand that schools like Kellenberg, Chaminade, and Sacred Heart are great schools, though. With that said, if your child is a successful student in your public school district, I don't see why you would NEED Catholic school. I was zoned for a bad school district growing up and didn't really have a choice because my parents didn't think it was very safe. I had friends who went to the schools in that district, though, and they were in AP classes and had straight A's. Their tests were nothing compared to mine, and were so easy IMO. I was an average student in my high school, but could've been an exceptional student in my public high school. Those friends got crazy scholarships and incentives offered to them, because much of the high school either didn't go to college, or went to NCC. Colleges are required to accept a certain percentage from public and private schools, so I feel that the competition to get into schools like Scranton, Siena, Loyola, Quinnipiac, etc. is much higher in the catholic schools because EVERYONE is applying to the same schools.

My parents had 529's for all of us, and I didn't pay for my college. Still, they made sure I was being mature about my schooling, and worked hard to get good grades or else I would be paying for my education. I applied for a ton of scholarships and even got away with graduating a semester early because I was able to load up on some courses along the way. Because I didn't have to pay for my education, I was able to save for a down payment on a house, which I was able to buy only 2 years after graduating college with 20% down. If I had student loans, I would never be able to do that, and I probably would not have been approved for my mortgage if I had those loans. My parents helped lay the foundation for me to start my adult life on the right foot, and now I am able to to start investing money for my daughter's education for the same reason.

I think it depends on the type of private school. Catholic school tuition is peanuts to, say, Columbia Prep or Fieldston. Parents who can afford Catholic school cannot necessarily afford $50k+ a year for college. I don't think it is the norm for kids who go to uber rich elementary/high schools to be taking out loans or working their way through school. So, really, I don't know that this situation is too common.

I went to Catholic school through high school and my parents paid for college.....but I went to a CUNY which was $2200 a semester!

DD is going to public school unless we stay on LI. And we're NOT staying on LI.

I'm sure there are various reasons. I would think that by placing a child in a good school at the beginning helps set the tone for the remainder of their school career. If your child goes to school in a bad district they are probably not held up to the same standard as if they went to a really good private school.

I think parents do the best that they can. If funds are available, parents put money away for college. If not, feeding the family today takes priority over saving for college.

Re: just thought of something....

For the second question, people have their reasons.

First of all, not everyone goes to college. I imagine some parents feel they will pay for the certain immediate future rather than the uncertain distant future.

My parents paid for me to attend Catholic school from pre-k to 12th, but they only could pay for some of college. I have large loans. I wouldn't change my experience though; I loved Catholic school, and college was easy because my high school, Holy Trinity Diocesan, was incredible.

When I was in college, and even graduate school, I felt I had already been taught the material or the skills necessary to easily absorb the material. I graduated undergrad with a 3.96 and grad with a 3.89, and I give much credit to my previous schooling for that.

As a result of my extremely positive experience, I would likely want the same for my kids.

Also, most people are legally adults by the time they enter college; I don't see what is wrong with giving them financial responsibilities.

People's financial situations change. Maybe they think they can save the money for college while paying for private school in the beginning, but then, they can't.

Parents may want a religious education for their children.

Parents may live in districts that have serious issues with violence.

SO many possible reasons exist.

I think there's a ton of reasons. Just as there's a vast difference in the cost of colleges, so there is with private schools as well. Paying for a Catholic hs is nowhere near paying for a private college.

Also-are you talking about daycare or private school lol

My parents sent me to public school K-8 (they would have sent me for HS as well but I wanted to tgo to Catholic HS)

they paid for my college and grad school.

I plan to do the same (god willing for my kids) but I would prefer to send them public K-12, depends on our HS options at the time.

I have to laugh because literally my friend says this EXACT thing!

She sends all her children to expensive catholic schools from middle school on. Because of that reasoning. Her two oldest have graduated from very good schools here that are well known and have very good contacts. But I don't see any reward for it. At all.

She tries to convince me of the same. I'm on the other end and would rather send my child to public school and pay for a great college. I already pay for high taxes to put her in a good public school with much better surroundings that I ever had. I didn't do so bad. I mean it's not the education or where you are raised ... it's HOW you're raised and what YOU do with it (in my opinion).

As far as networking and good contacts, that's what Girl Scouts and other educational extra curricular is for.
