oak vs. dark walnut floors
My home has the thin planks of oak (stained, but gunstock color). I love the look of the thick planked, darker wood floors. We are putting laminate in the basement. Would you choose something that matches the rest of the home, or go for the darker floors?

Personally I hate my dark floors. When installed they look great but show every piece of hair, dust, dirt ect. They drive me crazy.

I absolutely love my walnut floors. Personally, I think oak looks a little dated personally. I think dark floors with a neutral beige or gray wall color looks really nice

Love dark wood or very light light wood. Oak to me has zero character. But agree dark wood SHOWS every speck of dust.
We have oak floors and they have JUST been redone, I can't bring myself the justify the cost and inconvenience (we'd have to move out for a few days) to refinish them just yet. But I think I will eventually.

You can also look into bamboo flooring. It comes in many shade variations from very light to very dark. Stranded bamboo is the hardest "wood" floor you can buy. My contractor had to go out and get better nails because the nails that he used for hardwood floors for 20+ years weren't strong enough to go through my bamboo floor....

To answer your question, I don't think you have to match the rest of the house's flooring in the basement.
If you want to go with a darker walnut color, definitely do that. I have a medium/dark oak throughout my house and like it a lot.
If i were doing my basement, I'd definitely consider vinyl plank flooring over laminate. They have nice premium vinyl now that looks really nice and is waterproof. Laminate isn't waterproof. I don't know I'd completely discount laminate for a basement, but it seems that the vinyl is more suited for it.
I'd skip putting actual wood in a basement unless its really at grade like in a high ranch. There is just a lot of moisture in most basements that doesn't make it an ideal material for it.

I love the way the darker wood looks but you will be swiffering every single day. It shows everything!

love the look of the dark- i think less dust shows on dark if the finish is more matte.
