Has anyone done OIT for food allergies?
I'm considering this oral immunotherapy for my son's peanut allergy. Wondering if anyone has any experience with it? Thanks!

Has anyone done OIT for food allergies?
I've looked into it, but haven't taken the steps to actually do it. I think that if you have the means and the opportunity (and your child is ok with it), go for it! I can't imagine what it would feel like to not worry about dropping DS off for a playdate or have the nagging worry about what's going to happen when he goes off to college.

We just discussed OIT with my dd's allergist yesterday. We're still on the fence about it and right now my dd (almost 9 y/o) is not on board so it is a non-issue until she is ready. Our allergist was great about giving us the positive and negative. One thing I didn't think of is that when your child goes off to college, they will have to take their maintenance dose daily and follow the guidelines that goes along with that (rest period, etc). So she said you will have to trust your child will be totally compliant with the maintenance just like you will need to totally trust that your child will be careful and carry the epi-pen with avoidance.
I belong to OIT 101 on fb and it has been really helpful to understand what OIT is (however it is very pro OIT).

DS is only 4. I think it's interesting and would consider it when he's older, but hopefully by then the treatment is "easier" to maintain. Right now we couldn't do daily visits to the dr or anything.

It's not daily visits to the dr. You would go either once a week or once every other week (depending on what you choose). You dose on your own at home each day and only go in to updose. The first appt is definitely longer - making sure the child can handle the lowest dose, etc.

I'm not sure how DS's allergist does it, but I do know some require in-office visits for the first few weeks before at home dosing starts. Regardless, I'd wait until he's a bit older so he can understand what he's doing and describe and reactiions he may feel.
