Are there any teachers that switched careers?
I am getting the feeling that I am not keeping my LI job. I left the city, which was an OK building but still not the best environment, to come to LI and I am really beginning to second guess why I became a teacher.
Has anyone here left teaching for another career? If so, what do you do now? I am not sure what jobs I would even qualify for.

Are there any teachers that switched careers?
My sister quit teaching after 7 years. During the summer she got a job doing bookkeeping type stuff. It was supposed to be a temporary job, but they offered her a full time job at the end of the summer. She was a math teacher, so she had a numbers background.

My brothers best friend left teaching after 6 years (he was a tech teacher in hs) for becoming an auto mechanic. He just did not like teaching.

I did, missed teaching, and went back to school to become a librarian. I absolutely love being a librarian.

If I could go back (and not still have student load debt) I would have become a librarian. I taught English and love books and it would have been a better fit for me.
I left nearly 5 years ago, have been dabbling in freelance writing and have some regular work. I spent about a year and a half working as a fundraising copywriter, which I loved, but I got laid off. My daughter is in 4th grade and we haven't needed the money too much but I may look for something permanent, I just don't know what. I feel a little unemployable.

I did! I continued into the BCBA program immediately after my masters. I knew I didn't want to continue to teach while I was still going for my masters, but I finished the program, left my teaching job and now currently work as a behavior analyst and love it

i would prefer to not have to go back to school, as I have my master's and don't want to spend more $$ on school. i just feel so lost because i'm not sure if there is much else out there for me

I know a few teachers who left to become firemen but that probably doesn't help you......
I have also seen people leave teaching for things like invitation making, Etsy shop type things but I feel like that is hard.

Have you thought about maybe teaching in a college setting? I think I remember reading you teach math? If you have a math degree maybe try something in business? I went to school in CT so we had to have a subject major along with education classes so my bachelors was in psychology and then I took the education classes with it. Not sure if they do the same in NY for bachelors?
Maybe try teaching at an non profit school or catholic school? Maybe you will like it better?
Is there something you are interested in?

I didn't have any formal teaching experience (though I did have an educational background in secondary education) when I started teaching college. You need a graduate degree in your field to adjunct; teaching experience is generally not a requirement (though it may be preferred).

Why do you think you're not going to keep your job on LI? I posted to your question on the teachers board about the observation you just had... as hard as it is, you have to just try to shake it off. How many years have you been a teacher? Are you passionate about it or hate it?
I've gone through ups and downs and even at one point considered going to a pharmaceutical company. At the end of the day, I knew I loved being a teacher so I stayed and I'm thankful that I did. Let's just say for whatever reason the job on LI doesn't work out... you can return to the city within five years. You're not out of the game yet!  I know it's hard to stay positive when you feel beaten down... but you have options

A lot of the message boards I go to say it's not good, but just to give you some perspective I spent almost ten years looking for an elementary teaching job. Once I was eligible for library cert (18 credits and the CST certified me for three years while I finish because I had already gone through the teacher certification program), I was hired the same day I interviewed with one Long Island SD, with another calling me the same day for a second interview.

My son's home ABA therapist used to be a teacher in Brooklyn and I guess it became too much for her to commute out there (she recently had a baby a few months ago). So now she works for an agency as a ABA therapist.
Edited to say that she does not have a BCBA but there is a BCBA that comes every two week or so to supervise her.

Following - I was a teacher in a private school for 10 years and then got laid off. I was actually pregnant with #2 at the time and decided to just stay at home with my kids instead of looking for another job. I don't think I want to go back to teaching, and have been wondering what other things I would qualify for as well.

I did! I taught for over 5 years but it just was never for me. I don't do anything related to teaching or my subject area... I'm a clerk of the court. People always seem to think I'm crazy because teaching is "ideal".... but guess what, I've been doing this almost 7 years now & my job stress is super low, I'm union & I make more than I did as a teacher with a masters, so I can't complain... best thing I could have done for my sanity.
