Tipping question

What do you tip the mailman and garbage men? Our garage men have been really awesome this year with all of renovation garbage. I've slipped them a 20 each here and there but I want to do something appropriate for the holidays.

We do $20 per person (so $20 to mail carrier and $20 for each garbage man)

Technically postal workers aren't allowed to take gifts, so we give her some chocolates and a holiday card.

I thought postal workers were prohibited from accepting tips.

In any event, I never see the same mail person when I'm home so I wouldn't tip them.

I don't tip sanitation either, they don't do anything above and beyond where I am.

$20 each. I don't know single mail person that does not accept cash. Several relatives are mailmen.

I don't do the postman...ours is different each week.

We tip the garbage man $60 to split between 2 people. They take everything we put out, and are pretty friendly.

Nobody said they don't, it's just prohibited. They could be fired for it...not sure why a letter carrier would take the chance of being fired from their job with pension & benefits, for what,a couple hundred dollars maybe? That is not smart.

Re: Tipping question

This is what the USPS website says.

All postal employees, including carriers, must comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period.

We usually do $20 for the mailman and $20 for each of the garbage men but, our garbage men have stepped it up this year so we're going $25 each (taking the garbage from the side of the house and putting the cans back at the side of the house with the lids on if we haven't put the cans out, taking everything we put out, etc).
