Poop Training

So he's a little over 3 now & has been pee trained for about a month.... he's pretty good about telling us he needs to go & rarely has an accident.

Now pooping has been the struggle. He refuses to poop in the toilet. I ask him why & he says "pee is easy, poop is hard" ... I think he just doesn't like the idea of doing it. We don't pressure him but we tell him he's a big boy now & should try to poop in the potty & he can watch Wiggles which he loves. No success. Tried underwear to see if the uncomfortable sensation would make him not want to poop in them.... doesn't mind sitting in his sht & we had to throw out so many pairs of underwear that we went back to pull ups.

What happens is he holds it in (used to poop once or twice a day now maybe every third day but complains his belly hurts if it's been a while) & then has a huge poop during his sleep. I feel bad that he's holding it & told him he doesn't have to do that, just poop when you feel like it.
How do I get him to stop holding it in?? And secondly, to be agreeable at some point to using the toilet to poop? I don't even care if it's not any time soon, I'm just worried he's going to make himself sick holding it in all the time... trying to give him more fiber & water to keep things moving but it's still happening.

Dd was the same way. I forget for how long. Maybe a month or two? She was pee trained but scared to poop. Would hold it for like 4 or 5 days. Giving her more water and fiber seemed to help so she wouldn't find it painful. Then besides that we just had to give her time. Now she goes with no problems. Don't worry, it won't be like this forever.

I could have written your post word for word. My DS is 99% pee trained, but refuses to go poop in the potty. He will beg and cry for a diaper to go poo. He crosses his legs and begs. I ask him to go in the potty and he says he is scared. Once I didnt give him the diaper he just held it for 2 days. I havent repeated that bc it broke my heart (lol)... so now im just waiting for the day he says no more diapers. I still ask him daily to go in the potty and tell him im going to take him to toys r us if he does... he doesnt care siiiggghhhh

When DS first trained he was scared to poop in the potty. He thought it would hurt. He'd hold it every day until around dinnertime. So I just watched for him to start going and I ran him upstairs, sat him on the toilet - so by then it was too late to hold it in. Once he did it the first time, he said, "that was easy!" We made a huge deal of it - calling the grandparents, giving him a present, etc. And we never looked back. I think you just have to keep trying until something clicks.
