Poop training question (TMI?) - Only telling us at the last second

By some miracle, my 24 month old pee trained almost instantly less than two weeks ago. BUT, he won't tell us he has to poop until the last second, so by the time I have frantically put him on the potty, it's already coming out. At first I thought it was because his stool is usually kind of soft (maybe physically hard to hold in?), but it happens with firmer stool as well. Or he tells us way in advance but then gets off the potty after a few seconds saying "doesn't come out." And then says he has to go again, and we repeat sitting on the potty a half dozen times until finally it comes out (but again, he doesn't tell us until the last second, so it's already on its way out).

I have tried explaining that he has to tell us before it starts coming out, that he has to wait on the potty for poop to come out, and I've tried to keep him on the potty with books, toys, and even the ipad. I made up a "poopy song" telling him to sit on the potty and relax and let it out, all to no avail.

Will it eventually just naturally click for him that he has to tell us earlier or that he has to sit and wait on the potty? Any tips on ways I can explain to him not to wait until the last second? I can deal fine with the accidents at home, but I live in mortal fear of a messy poop accident while we're out! Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

IMO he's young and he probably doesn't realize til that time.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to just wait it out. I was hoping for some magic tip I could use, but I'll just be grateful for the pee training!
