Another Zika Question

Sorry. I don't want to Chat Icon
This isn't a wwyd but a general question. I have two weeks in Orlando for work the end of October when I will be just shy of 4 mos pregnant. We booked Disney the first week of December when I will be 5 mos. DH, my dr, and I will decide if these will be appropriate trips for me to take. I know everyone here will say they won't go if they were pregnant.

My question is what do the pregnant women in FL do? I mean they're not relocating for 9 mos? What precautions are they taking? Also, I've seen news this past week that we have Zika in NY now too. Is this correct? Anyone see this? I also saw certain areas are being sprayed for the mosquitos that carry Zika?

I'd appreciate your thoughts. Don't want to start any arguments just sincerely wondering what women in infested areas do and what we will do if it's here.

Another Zika Question

I would go. There was a small location in Miami that there was Zika. Zika has been around for a long time and it's just now made the news.

Re: Another Zika Question

Someone mentioned the NY thing to me yesterday but I feel like if it were here, we'd have heard more about it.
Maybe they are spraying forthe type mosquitoes that COULD carry it as a precaution?
I haven't seen an news articles, so I don't know

Yes, but if you read the article, the virus was transmitted by sex or mosquitoes outside of the country, not local mosquitoes.

ETA: I have no idea what women in FL are doing- I can't imagine being put in a position like that. I would not go if I were in your shoes though.

Yeah that's what I figured.
I know there have been cases, but not from mosiquitos who originated here

Re: Another Zika Question

Not to downplay it, but all of those cases were contracted by traveling outside of the US or via sex. There aren't any cases in NY from mosquitos in the area.

As for FL, if you do decide to go, I would probably take as many precautions as possible (covered clothing, repellents, limiting time outdoors), even though the chance of getting bitten by a Zika infected mosquito is rare.

Also, OP, to answer your question, there was an oped in the Washigton Post from an obgyn who said her more affluent patients planned on moving up north while pregnant and she had a huge fear for her poorer patients who can't afford to do that.

To me, it's one thing if you live there and your home, family, work, etc are there. Then you have no choice. But to choose to go to a state that is starting to have cases of locally contracted Zika< no, as a pregnant woman I would not go. It is not worth the risk. There have not been any locally contracted cases of Zika here in NY. You cannot compare NY with FLA, which is one of the riskiest US states to start having Zika Infected mosquitos due to location.

All I know is that I worry about this Zika every time I'm outside. I sprayed myself last night and still got about 10 bites while being outside. Those suckers love me so I'm screwed!

I dunno, if the trips been planned I know myself I would wanna go. Even though I've been freaking about Zika too. I was in Disney in May. I didn't get bit. I didn't wear anything either. I would definitely wear deet now though. I would try to avoid being outside during dusk. 430-8 ish. My cousin lives there. She's ttc now. Her dr isn't overly concerned yet. she's just told everything we already know. Like wearing deet etc. she's not in Miami though.

Is it weird that I never get a mosquito bite?

And I'm like- what mosquitoes?

People in Florida take precaution just like people in Brazil and other parts of the world with Zika. They wear bug spray, limit time outside, etc.

I'm not overly worried about Zika and my husband is driving me CRAZY about it (even woke me up one night because he got bit and wanted to know if he should get tested **eyeroll**), but (and I know you didn't ask for a WWYD - sorry - I said if I wasn't pregnant I'd go to Florida but being pregnant now, I would avoid it. My OB tended to agree with me - my parents live there and she told me not to go visit.

Me too.... Chat Icon I camp often, and everyone around me is spraying themselves like crazy, and still getting bit, and I rarely spray, and get almost no bites. Sometimes I joke that it's actually mosquito attractant that they're using... Chat Icon Chat Icon

There are some people on here from Florida. Maybe they will answer. I would be wearing long sleeves and pants, treating my clothes with that bug treatment (can't remember the name), spraying myself all over, and staying inside as much as possible.
If I had to decide right now, I wouldn't go to Florida pregnant.

Re: Another Zika Question

i was listening to NPR on my way home and heard a reporter who is in FL, who is also pregnant... she said that she's wearing long sleeves and long pants (which she hates at this time of the year in florida), she sprays her clothes with bug repellent, she's avoiding the area where the cases have been identified.

she also mentioned getting a packet from the CDC, but that's when i has to stop listening because i had arrived home.

that's all i know.

if i were pregnant and lived in florida, i would relocate until the baby was born.

i am the opposite.

if there is a mosquito within flying range, it will find me and FEAST on me until it exploded from all the blood. but before it died, it would send out a smoke signal to all the mosquitoes and they would then have an all-you-can-eat buffet on me.

I've seen a few interviews from people that live there, and they said they would just stay indoors as much as possible until baby was born.

Is it not the dusk mosquitos. The Asian Tiger mosquitos are actually the ones out all day, the day time biters. I see them bouncing off my windows during the day when it's humid or wet out. It has been said the daytime is the worst time to get bit. I have gotten bit many times just sitting outside on a regular day, getting attacked by them. So now that I am pregnant, I only go out when I absolutely need to and wear pants and long sleeves. I go to my car and back, etc. It's not worth the chance to me.

Another Zika Question

I have the imagine they just do their best to avoid getting bit. Meaning: wearing at least 20% deet, long sleeves and pants, staying inside as much as possible, getting rid of all stagnant water around their homes, etc.... catching zika while pregnant is extremely risky, my doctor said if you catch it chances are the baby will have an issue. Most infected areas are advising women to NOT get pregnant for two years in hopes they'll have it under control / better managed. But i guess there is really no way to 100% guarantee they won't get bit it just takes one of those little blood suckers....scary stuff. Play it by ear and see what the situation is like in Orlando when the time comes.

Re: Another Zika Question

We have a trip planned next month to Disney. I will be 20 weeks pregnant at that time.
From what I have read the "out break" in Miami is localized and 265 miles from the theme parks. The mosquitos only FLY 400 yards. So yes they can be transferred buy moving sitting pools of stagnate water. but its unlikely. We called Disney and inquired about their treatments for mosquitos and were not allowed to be told specific info on what they are doing. However they did say they are taking every precaution and have plans in place working with local government.
I will be spraying my clothing (not on my body) with OFF deep woods and then using the Avon DEET free on my skin.
