obligated to go to wake/funeral?

i just started working at a new job 5 months ago. Very small office, myself and 3 others in our building/department. My boss and I get along very well but I wouldn't say we are close.

Her mother passed away, wake today, funeral tomorrow. The other woman in my office is implying that I should be going to the wake and the funeral. By going to the funeral, I will be missing (and not being paid for work) and the wake is on my own time.

I would have thought I would be ok with just going to one or the other...

You are not obligated to got to either but it would be a kind gesture to go to the wake for a little while.

Wake only is ok.
Funeral is generally for family and closer friends, not co-workers

I would go to the wake only for a little while. I would not attend the funeral in this circumstance.

Wake, not funeral. There's no way I'd lose a day's pay to go to my bosses mother's funeral.

Agreed...no obligation but the kindness will go a long way with your boss

Re: obligated to go to wake/funeral?

Thanks everyone
They decided to shut down my building so that everyone could attend the funeral, so I will be going to that but I told them that my schedule didn't allow me to attend the week.
