How do you answer this question?
My daughter is beginning to apply to colleges; all of the applications asked for ethnicity. She always puts down that she is white/Caucasian but she has a very ethnic (Iranian) last name and I can't help but wonder what would happen if she put down Middle Eastern? Would they discriminate or would they welcome her to diversify the student body?

What ethnicity does she identify with? Having an Iranian last name doesn't make her Iranian unless her bloodline is Iranian. And if she's never identified as Iranian, why would she start now just for college?

Do you have to answer that?
I thought they had a "prefer not to answer" option.

How do you answer this question?
She always answers white but I wondered what would happen if she does put down that she's Middle Eastern - would schools discriminate?

By law they can't of course. What they ACTUALLY do though, who knows. I might not even answer that question. I don't thing it's relevant and I don't see how they can legally ask that either

I don't think so. We have just gone through this process (my SS is leaving for college in 3 weeks!) and visited many schools last summer and listened to their admissions/recruitment speeches. I think most colleges and universities are looking more for a diverse student body and would welcome someone of a "different" background. I am not saying she would get favored treatment, but I also do not think she would be discriminated against.

I don't think schools would discriminate - legally, they cannot.

I don't think they would discriminate. I actually think it could work to her advantage if they are trying to diversify their student base.
As an aside I HATE this question. I always put down Caucasian for my kids even though they are half Hispanic but don't understand why those are options because they are not mutually exclusive.

How do you answer this question?
I figured that they couldn't discriminate but who knows? I hate that we even to have to worry about something like this. There was a Middle Eastern sub question to clarify what type of Caucasian?!?!?!

I check white and hispanic for my kids. They're not one or the other, they're both!

It's such a dumb question. Technically Caucasian is from the Georgia / Armenian region anyway.

Re: How do you answer this question?
If she is not comfortable checking off Caucasian then I would just check "other"
ETA that would be illegal to discriminate. I think they ask for reporting purposes for student body makeup

Re: How do you answer this question?
I don't think they will discriminate well legally they can't and if anything IMO it will help her.
I am pretty sure most schools try to reach a certain diverse amount of students they have attend their school so while not right I can see them choosing between 2 applicants with the same grades activities etc and making the choice on their ethnicity ratio

This. What does she want to check off?
Many times they also this question not for admission purposes, but to track the makeup of the student body/applicants.
I always check off Hispanic or Hispanic/white. My son will check off Hispanic white as well. This also sometimes helps with scholarship information as once you check off certain races you'll start getting scholarship information that's ethnic/race specific sent to you, which is fine with me.

How do you answer this question?
LOL I laugh every time I see this question. I have an Asian name but I'm Hispanic with American Indian heritage. As a female marriage messes with linage.
My kid is a minority all over the place
Why do they even bother?

How do you answer this question?
I always tell my seniors that it's for statistical purposes only, and that unless they want to be a statistic, answer "prefer not to answer." aka: "none of your f'n business"
