Yes it is pricey. I haven't had a birthday party yet for my son, just home parties... probably will keep it that way for a while lol

I thought the same thing but realistically when I added everything up, it ended up being the same amount for a home party.

Yeah home parties aren't much cheaper and you then have to do it all on your own and at least at a place you don't get straglers and your house stays nice and clean.
My solution is don't have parties. A child does not need to have a birthday party every year. My son is 4 and had his first one. Other years we have family over for pizza and cake. NICE AND CHEAP!

I used to own a business that specialized in children's birthday parties. They were expensive. We got that complaint a lot, but I can tell you I was not making a killing with this business and it was hard work. Not even close to a killing. But rent is expensive, utilities are expensive, employees are expensive.
One mom who was from Bayside told me she did a party at Pizzeria Uno for a fraction of the price. Maybe check that out?

They are really expensive. Just a thought, but you could always do a small vacation or the American girl store with family instead.

Re: Just a vent!!
I hear you its crazy.
shop around. look on groupon for deals. for 2 of my DD birthday I got a deal through groupon. one was at California pizza kitchen very reasonable. her last one was bowling it cost me a good amount of money but I had 25 kids I think and it was cheaper then what I would have spent at like a bounce place.

Just a vent!!
We're doing our first party out this year and it really is so expensive. I ended up saving a bit by booking a weekday party. She goes to school 2 half days so I know most of the parents sah or the kids' grandparents watch them and will hopefully be able to bring them. I ran it by her 2 bffs and definitely won't mind if all 20 kids don't show up!

Re: Just a vent!!
The light at the end of the tunnel is that when they are in their tweens and teens, the majority of kids (at least the ones that I know of personally, including DS and his friends), would prefer just having a couple of close friends over and playing video games for hours, and possibly a sleepover.

This! This is the first year DD has asked for a party with friends so she is getting one. She will be 6. All other years we have pizza and cake with family. Last year we took her out for a fun day, build a bear, then home for pizza and cake. Beofre they are old enough to know or care, it's all for the parents anyway.
Her party this year is at a gymnastics place and it's not bad- only $225 for 15 kids

I work for a place that does kids parties and I agree. For a party we bust our asses. Set everything up, clean everything up, entertain and engage the kids (and adults). Serve food and cake. Trying to keep everything running smoothly. It's exhausting. And some parents don't give a tip, which is disappointing. I am soooo appreciative when I get a tip, because I really work my ass off air know it's expensive.

We had a mandatory 15% tip which actually ended up being a lot of money for the women that worked the party, but it made the party even more expensive. Our party was very hands on so the women did have to work very hard, I would usually only leave 30 minutes between parties to clean up/set up and sometimes they did as many as 4 parties back to back.

Re: Just a vent!!
I agree, it's insane. Last year we did a party for DS for his 6th, but it was the first one we did. Prior to that (and most likely most years to come) we just did a simple bbq with cake at the house. IMO they don't need a big party every year. As a kids I can only recall 1 birthday that my parents hosted at a place. My brother and I had summer birthdays and most years were just home parties with some family and a few friends.

Re: Just a vent!!
We've always done home parties, I can't justify the cost of a party place, it's ridiculous for 1-2 hrs of fun.
DH and I have recently decided to forgo parties all together and we're going to start taking the kids away for a 3-4 day long weekend around their birthday instead. We feel it's a better use of money, a way to make great memories as a family, and a chance for the kids to see different places. We'll just have the grandparents over for dinner and cake on their actual birthday but in general, I'm so over the party thing, it's so much effort, work, and money and it's over in a flash!

Wow 15% tip would be amazing.

I find house parties to be more expensive and your stuck prepping, cleaning and then setting up, then cleaning all over again... the price of food drinks decorations entertainment then if you dont have it, you need to rent tables and chairs... i mean it costs a ridic amount...
Last year it rained on my dd bday and i ended up with 20 kids in my house it was a b×tch to clean up and her playroom was destroyed.
I will gladly pay $400 for a party i have to do nothing but show up lol and honestly $400 is not even that pricey considering what they do for you.

We are having a party at a place this year because by the time all is said and done it is cheaper than a home party. Decorations and games could be $100 alone.

At home parties are equally as expensive- I just had dd party and for 22 adults and 12 children I spent over $450- and I kept it very basic- party city decorations and paper goods-Pizza, salad, grilled chicken, cake (1/4 sheet cake from BJs), ice cream and a piñata instead of party favors. Things are just so $$$$$.

This exactly. Did one home party and just had snacks (lots of them) and soft drinks. It was prob 200 for food and decorations from Christmas tree shop. Then we had to rent a small table and chairs like $50 and we did entertainment which was 200.
It adds up so quick! Plus 1 day to prep and 1 day to clean up.

One of my most expensive parties was at home. The 2nd was bowling. They were all worth it though as the kids had a ball.

We have a party every year. I don't think it's so much of a "craze" as I also had one every single year until I was 12. Granted, there were less choices. If you are careful you can do it for $400 or less. If you don't have it you don't have it but for me I think it's a priority and I'll cut somewhere else. My kids love their parties, talk about them for weeks before and after. Plus I really skimp on the gift bc they get so much at the party. Maybe I'll spend $20 instead of $100+.
