Soy Alternatives?

DD is 3.5 months old. We're on our 3rd formula. She spits up frequently but not excessively. She is gaining weight well, even better than DD2 who never spit up. She also has terrible bouts of what I'm assuming are gas pains. She'll suddenly scrunch her body up and her belly gets super hard. And she'll scream. And scream. And scream. It mostly happens at night but on occasion during the day.

Ped suggested soy formula but I'm not too crazy about that idea (and I'm not sure why). We've tried Up & Up's version of regular Enfamil (about 5-6 weeks), Gentlease (about 5-6 weeks), and now she's on Similac Total Comfort (about 1.5 weeks so far). She starts off ok when we switch but then she goes back to her old screaming, crying, in pain self. It kills me to see her so upset. We have her on probiotics, give her gas drops, colic calm, put her on her belly, reclined, flat on her back, sitting up in the bumbo, bicycle her legs, etc.

Ped also says she'll outgrow it soon. I just feel so bad for her. Any recommendations?

She also nurses in the morning and at night, once each time, for about 5-10 mins on each breast but doesn't get too much. The rest of the time she's on formula and has been since birth.

She's so different than DD1, who never had issues with breast milk or formula, rarely cried, rarely needed gas drops. I don't know if DD2 is overly fussy or just a typical baby lol and we got lucky with DD1. At least they're both sleepers lol.

Soy Alternatives?

Same thing happens with dd1 and I tried alimentum. My pedi (now my old pedi) said there's no need for it, she doesn't have a milk allergy blah blah. But she was a new baby overnight.

My ped always recommended not playing the formula game if possible. I also think she may out grow it soon. My DS was similar and did well on Gerber Good Start. I know she's uncomfortable but hopefully she'll grow out of it soon. At least she sleeps.

Re: Soy Alternatives?

It sounds like a little bit of both

Fussy but obviously has gas pains

Alimemtum may help,we did half that and half gentlese for Dylan

Also has drops before and after the bottle.
Burp after every oz fed.

And baby yoga. So those bike kick all day long

She will
Prob outgrow it. Dylan screamed 24\7. Hit 5 months and became a different kid.

Hang in there!

Have you tried Alimentum? Both my DS and DD were a LOT better on it. My nephew was so bad my sister took him to a pediatric gastro and he had to go on Elecare.

ETA some insurance plans will actually cover it w/ a dr. note.

I don't know much about formula but I do know a bit about soy. You mentioned you don't know why you don't like soy, well 95% of soy i the usa is gmo soy. Unless it is usda approved organic then that soy is not gmo. Additionally soy mimics estrogen in the body. Small amounts in the natural state (like organic non gmo soy beans - or edamme) is okay in moderation. Unfortunately soy is in everything! It is because it is cheap to produce and we overproduce. I am pretty sure unless you specifically avoid soy you are getting too much in your diet.

Good luck with your decision and I hope there is a formula that helps your dd.

Yup that was it. I knew there was a reason but couldn't think of it so late at night lol.

We recently switched DS to Similac Soy. He's been on it for a couple of weeks and seems to be ok with it. Now this post is scaring me. Should I switch?

Re: Soy Alternatives?

Dd ended up with a severe milk protein allergy. She was on prescription formula. While going through it, I was told that many babies with milk allergies are also allergic to soy. I was directed to steer clear away from soy, even once we started grains, purees, solids.
