HELP!!!! If your DC has had coxsackie or impetego Please come in
I have a few questions.
DS had a cold last week. Sunday he spiked a fever and I took him to the dr. Dr said it was bronchitis and gave him antibiotic Monday am he had 3 spots on his face in the am near his mouth I didn't think anything of it. When i got home from work and he woke up from his nap he had blisters and sores on his face/chin.
Took him to the dr and he felt it was impetego from strep. Rapid culture came back negative but dr anticipated that because he had been on antibiotics for 2 days at this point. Dr switched his antibiotic to something that treats impetigo.
Now he has been on antibiotic for 2 full days and the sores are still spreading. on his face, hands, arms, legs and tush.
He is MISERABLE ! so itchy he can't sleep
Just curious if your DC has had either impetigo or coxsackie
1. where was the sores/rash
2. were they itchy?
3. how long did it take for it to stop spreading?
i feel horrible for him!

HELP!!!! If your DC has had coxsackie or impetego Please come in
sorry your little one is feeling awful. My son had coxsackie the week of Thanksgiving. It started the Sunday before, he was not himself, very sleepy and warm. That night he woke in the middle of night and we could not calm him down. I knew something was up and brought him to the dr that Monday before Thanksgiving. I showed the dr the spots on his hands, feet, butt and groin. She then said it was coxsackie (at first she thought it was just a virus, not our reg dr ! ) The worse days were Sunday and Monday. By Thanksgiving he was better. The spreading stopped basically as we noticed he had them. He got one under his nose and a small cluster next to his lips. Those were the only others that came out after we went to dr. He seemed itchy. I used calamine on him, everywhere but face. I gave benadryl and motrin at night for pain and itch. It's pretty sucky !! The virus lasts in their stool for weeks after the spots go away. So make sure to wash your hands lots !

If it is Coxsackie, antibiotics won't help. I gave Tylenol and Motrin. But my kids only had the sores in their mouth. That, and a low fever. They were miserable. There were 2-3 days of severe discomfort, and a few more to really feel better. The good news is not everyone is susceptible and only 2 of my 4 kids got it.

My ds had coxsackie at 9 months old. He developed a high fever at the very start and I took him to the ped the first day he was sick, and they immediately saw the spots in his mouth. I was told the spots on the outside of the body come out once the virus is on its way out. My ds didn't seem itchy by the rash or notice it at all, actually.

HELP!!!! If your DC has had coxsackie or impetego Please come in
My DD had Impetigo last year. She didn't have a fever, just a runny nose with crusties under it, which I thought was just from having a cold. Fast forward a few days, it got much worse, and then she got it in the corners of her eyes and eyelids from rubbing her eyes! That's when I took her in. I had no idea what impetigo even was! She was prescribed a topical medicine that cleared it up. Muciprin or something that? I don't remember it being itchy for her though.

It's so hard to say because different kids get things differently. My DD was diagnosed with coxsackie at 13 months. She had a low grade fever and the only blisters she had were 3 blisters on the back of her throat. She never got a rash and within 48 hours later she was fine.
My girlfriend's daughter had coxsackie for what felt like forever. She had an on and off high fever for a week and then once the fever broke she had a rash all over her face for a week. The rash turned into some funky skin condition that lasted several weeks. The poor munchkin wasn't herself for over 4 weeks!

HELP!!!! If your DC has had coxsackie or impetego Please come in
Impetigo victim here
It was on her head. OMG was it horribly on her head. It was sticky and puss-like. Scabby and spread. She also had it on her arms by her elbows where her eczema already attacks her.
It took a week once she was on antibiotics to truly clear up.
She got one on her high cheek bone and one on her forehead but both started AFTER the Rx so they didn't get to the open sore point.
They itched her but it was the open sore that really was bothersome.
Although it's highly contagious, she was never kept from school. Our doctor said it could only be spread by direct contact with the open sore. So the day we found out she went to school with a wrapping on her arm (you'd think she was dealing with a dislocated elbow). We informed the nurse and teacher. But she never missed a day of school. We kept her open sores covered until the dried up.
Horrible stuff.
They told us her eczema makes her a likely victim. But now we know better. The first sore popped up we thought it was a mosquito bite gone bad. Then it was just assumed it was her eczema. But her scalp has NEVER been affected by eczema so it was a clear "what is happening" moment.
