Coworker Gift (sorry early)
How would you handle?
I worked closely with a girl who I also have a good personal/friendly relationship with. She did not directly report to me, but I did assign her work and she helped me out a lot as she had a dotted line reporting relationship. I am in a higher position, and always greatly appreciated her, so I was generous around the holidays. for 2 years I gave her a gift card and a nice book to use at work (she loved the books). It's customary in my workplace to gift down, not up - she never gave me holiday gifts but was extremely generous when I had DS.
Now, I changed roles and do not work directly with her. I do still sit very near her and we chat socially almost everyday. I am sort of a mentor for her.
I now have other people who report to me, so I will plan to get them something for the holidays. I was thinking of getting her just the book and a nice notecard. Do you think she would expect something much more? I don't want to hurt feelings but at the same time, I now have others I need to buy for and no longer work with her in the same capacity.

I think a token gift would be appropriate, especially if the culture is that supervisors give supervisees gifts. You are no longer her supervisor, so I think she'd assume to not expect something from you.

i think that's fine especially since she doesn't reciprocate, she shouldn't expect something so elaborate.
