Introducing Solids

My almost 6 month old refuses solids. He literally shuts his mouth and will not open it for the spoon. Everything I manage to trick him into taking a bite he makes the saddest little face. I'd there anything I can do? I tried mixing fruit with oatmeal, fruit alone, oatmeal alone. Homemade and a few different brands. Is he just not ready??

Introducing Solids

Yep, sounds like he's not ready. I'd try again in a couple of weeks.

I agree.

We did Baby Led Weaning w/ DD1. We skipped cereals entirely and gave her whole foods to eat. We started with sliced baked sweet potato. She mushed it around, tasted it, and really didn't eat anything. We did that with all of her foods. Eventually she got used to them and started eating. She didn't start eating consistently til about 11 months. Breast milk and formula were her main source of nutrition until she was about a year old.

Agreed. Ds was 5 months but from the first spoonful leaned in and opened his mouth for the spoon. If he hadn't, I would have just let him be and try again the next month. But, what I might do is keep putting him in his high chair when you guys eat, this way he watches you at your level and associates the high chair with eating and can start seeing how you eat. We would do this and he would try to reach for our food that's how we really knew he was ready.

Re: Introducing Solids

Dd never really ate purees - she was really resistant. We didn't do strict baby led weaning per se, but we did just switch over to really soft solids and she took to those soooo much better.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'll give it another shot in a few weeks.

I'd try again in a week or 2. When we tried with DS, he was gagging every time he just saw the spoon. Tried again about a week later and he did great!

Re: Introducing Solids

My girls started fruits at 4 months and now have it twice a day. The first time they didn't really know what to do with the spoon but now they open their mouths really well and love apples, bananas and pears. When I give oatmeal, I mix in some friut.
