Out of the loop
Past few years I have worked 1-2 jobs, commuted, and had 2 babies. I just left an abusive marriage. Life is busy. But I want to maintain friendships, maybe date in the future. Besides work, kids, my church, ands my current situation I really don't have much to talk about. I know a bit about what's going on in the news just by radio, over hearing bits and pieces, Facebook on my phone kinda helps, I'm not too political, I listen to the radio but don't know names of artists I like and hardly watch tv these days. Often i don't know what others are talking about. I smile and nod. I guess is it called pop culture? Society for dummies? Is there any short cut I can go to to know what's going on in the world and keep the info in my head?

Re: Out of the loop
It may be sad, but I get a lot of my news from the late night comedy shows. I DVR and then watch the first 15 minutes. It usually covers really big things that happen. I guess if you want more serious info - maybe listen to 1010 wins. "You give us 22 minutes, we'll give you the world." I have 2 kids under 3 at home and I hear you...there's just no time to keep up with everything. Don't be too hard on yourself...sounds like you have a lot on your plate.

Re: Out of the loop
Whenever you can get on the computer or internet on your phone, ipad, etc, check out a local paper. I check it out a few times a day and try and watch the nightly news before I go to bed.

I was going to suggest this too. It's informative but short and clever.

Re: Out of the loop
I signed up for twitter and find that I get snippets of what is going on in the real world and the "fake" world...ie I signed up for BBC news, CNN, NBC news, huffington post, etc etc and then for the fake stuff I follow a few celebrities and also access hollywood..I feel like I can keep afloat now plus my husband LOVES current events so he is always going on and on and on :) about something!

Out of the loop
I feel that way too many times, things happen in the world and I never know when it took place, shootings, riots etc
I use to keep up on the new but over the last few years find myself backing off. partly due to my job and what I hear everyday.
Like you, I need to get back in the loop :)

Re: Out of the loop
I check out google news like once a day and just read anything that catches my eye. I'm not gonna force myself to read anything that doesn't interest me but I usually pick up enough info to make small talk. I also tend to break the ice and start the conversation so maybe you can try doing that. If you steer the conversation to things that interest you, it's a lot easier.
If someone starts talking about something I've heard nothing about, I just say something along the lines of "oh wow, i didn't hear about that... what happened?" Then they explain and I feel like I learned something lol.
