If your LO had a milk allergy...

If you had more children and formula fed, did you start them right away on a special formula given the family history, or did you just do the standard formula? Did your subsequent child/children have any allergies or stomach issues?

I'm so scarred from our ordeal with dd1, that I'm terrified to jump into just the basic formula!

OMG I would love to know this too! We went through torture for 4 months with DD and we are trying for a second now and I'm petrified of going through the same thing.

Personally i only have 1 dd but my close friend just had her 2nd a few months ago. She started her on reg formula but as soon as she saw an issue she changed to alimentum without thinking twice. And baby is better.
You can try but if you see an issue change immediately. You now know what the symptoms are no need to wonder or start asking dr what to do.

My first had a mild whey allergy. She was ebf and didn't react to anything I ate but got hives from milk and cheese when we tried them around 10 months. My second is 9.5 months and has no issues with cheese so far. Not the same as what you dealt with but that was my experience.

I spoke to my ped. about this before DD2 was born. From what I've learned, you pretty much have to start with regular formula, and pay close attention to any signs/symptoms of MSPI.
DD1 had a mild intolernace, DD2 is severe - cannot even tolerate alimentum. Usually if one child has it, the others will too, but not 100%.

ETA: I knew within a week DD2 would have a problem with dairy, amongst other things.

just bc one child has it, does not mean another will. in my case, my first did not have an allergy, but the second did. I would start with regular formula and if you have any concerns call the ped asap and get them tested.

DS1 had a milk protein allergy and was on alimentum. DS2 went straight to Similac Advance and never had any problems.

Yes in my case my 2nd child had it, although not as severe (she did not have reflux and was not so colicky as my 1st was). I breastfed and gave her enfamil and at week 3 she had blood in stool and was getting very fussy. She had digestion issues in general for months. After the blood in stool, we went right to Neocate instead of trying Nutramigen--the ped gave me the choice considering the family history. My 1st child could not have milk products until age 4. Now my daughter is fine with milk products at 16 months.

My ds was on similac sensitive and had horrible acid reflux which the dr gave him an rx for. When I had my daughter i breastfed and supplemented similac sensitive. But she was still in comfortable but found alimentum worked for her. We switched her to milk at one then she had a reaction got her tested and was not allergic to milk but she lactose Intolerance. She drinks lactose free milk still at 18 months. But if I was to have another baby I would start at similac sensitive again and see where is goes from there. You are informed now and know the signs of digestive problems so you'll figure what formula are working or not working for your little one. I wish you all the luck!

Both of my kids ended up on alimentum. I did have to start with the regular and sensitive formula first though before the doc recommended alimentum.

Thanks everyone. For dd, we were ultimately on neocate. I think I'm. Going to start with gerber soothe which is just a slight step up from the basic gentle and go from there!
