I opened a new savings account today at a new bank and felt so uncomfortable with all the questions I was asked. Is this the norm?

I think it's to prevent identity theft, to keep people from opening fraudulent accounts.

It's part of the Patriot Act.

Other than basic personal info?

Maybe they were asking questions to get to know you better to see if there's any other products/accounts that you would benefit from.

Yes, this.

Ugh, maybe I'm just bitter because of the FBAR, but I really can't stand parts of this act.

DH and I have seriously considered splitting up our money so we will not have to file this FBAR form. He doesn't like that the US government is involved in his bank accounts when he isn't a US citizen and has never lived in the US. It's ridiculous.
