Riverhead?
DH and I are looking to get away for a few nights. I've been searching for hotels in Montauk and Fire Island and the prices are just crazy!
I want to be near a beach, but I don't have to be ON one. Would Riverhead be a good choice?

Riverhead?
No beaches near Riverhead as it is in middle of the island right where it forks, but you could always drive to one.
Many of the hotels out east do require a three nights stay if on a weekend, as it is the height of the tourist season. There are some nice B&Bs out here if you check around.

Baiting Hallow is next to riverhead (there is a beach in riverhead Iron Pier) Quogue, Mattituck is also nice. Dune road beaches are only about 10min from Riverhead

Not true, south jamesport beach is the best beach. There is no rocks, and no waves. It's like being on the sound but without all the rocks. They have a playground, a grilling area with charcoal grills and a tennis court. It's awesome!

Re: Riverhead?
Riverhead is a great choice. There are plenty of beaches on the North Fork- on the sound and on the bay. I prefer the bay. South Jamesport beach is great, so is Veterans Park in Mattituck, and New Suffolk Beach in New Suffolk. Just check on getting a non-residential permit. There's plenty to do. Lots of shopping near the hotels (3 in Riverhead). Go to the vineyards, farm stands, local restaurants on the North Fork. Stroll Love Lane in Mattituck. Take a day trip (40 minutes from Riverhead hotels) to Greenport, etc.
