Name Alexander...
I feel nicknames are out of the parents control. My kid has a short name and has 4 nicknames. Not forced just what adults and kids have come up for her. She always calls herself her fI'll name.

I am a nickname fan but I do think that w Alexander people will assume Alex. My son has a traditional name and it has a common nickname which is pretty much the only name we use for him, still I wanted him to have the traditional name.

Re: Name Alexander...
I recommend giving the formal name. I know many who liked their nicknames as kids, but as they got older preferred to be called by their more formal "adult" name. While charlie, Xander, Chrissie etc sound nice while they are young, giving them a formal name like Alexander gives your child options as they grow older. Some kids love their nicknames and some do grow with their child (Alex seems more timeless than Xander) but by giving them Alexander he in theory would have multiple options as he gets older. One might "suit" his personality better as he grows older. My daughter is Madelyn. We called her Maddie. Many friends call their Madison's or Madelyn's Maddie. My daughter last year declared Maddie was a baby name and prefers Madelyn. Just like people call Christine -Chrissie or Chris.

As for Xander as a nickname. I say if you like that name just use it as a full name instead of alexander

My cousin is Alexander and I thought it was so cool growing up that everyone called him Xander. But I like names like that.
