Looking for opinions re: travel for a play date

My DD's best friend recently moved an hour and a half away. They want us to come over for a play date, which would be great, but timing is an issue. I live in the city, and want to avoid rush hour, so the earliest I can leave is 10am. This means I would get to them around 11:30 or so. The friend still naps, so we'd have to leave the play date at 2, meaning we'd only be there for 2.5 hours.

My question is, does it seem worth it to drive 2.5 hours for a 2.5 hour play date? I obviously want the girls to see each other, but it just seems like a lot of effort for a short period of time. As an alternative, I'd push it to a weekend when we could leave earlier (since rush hour isn't a factor) or wait until the friend drops her nap, but that could be a while (they are both 2.5 years old).

Looking for thoughts. Thanks!

Does your dd still nap? Are you friends with the mom that you could stay while your dds friend naps? Maybe take your dd to lunch local while her friend naps and come play more after. Maybe her friend won't nap that day or take a later nap bc your dd is there.

Rush hour shouldn't be as bad as you think since most people are going towards the city when you're leaving and they're leaving when you're coming back.

Could they meet you somewhere at a midpoint?

Not sure how long the nap is, but what if you have the play date after her nap instead?

Looking for opinions re: travel for a play date

Ive done it because I live in NJ while my good friend lives in LI. I left at 930 for there at 11 and stayed until 230- 3.

Is it a PIA? Yes but for once in a while its worth it because my friend is worth it. ITs not a weekly or even monthly thing. We take turns about every 3 months.

If you want to do it then it will be worth it, if its not then youll look for excuses. Not meant harsh just meant truthfully. Either you really want to see her or you don't. And again I don't mean it in any way rude just being honest.

Your friend won't push the nap back an hour once in a while? I just think 2 hours flies at a play date so that would really stink.

We're friends, but not super close. More through our children. I'd totally be fine staying there during the nap, but she didn't offer when she mentioned her DD goes down by 2. Maybe I should just outright ask!

Taking a local lunch is a good idea - hadn't though of that. Thanks for the suggestion.

I know I'm going the opposite direction of rush hour when I'm out of the city - but my concern is getting through the city during rush hour times. I live in the 60's so it tends to get quite backed up during rush hour.

I think this is totally it. We met through our kids, and became friends through that, but it's the type of friendship that I think will certainly dissipate over time. And since our kids are both so young, I don't even think they'll remember each other in a few years (unless we see them regularly, which is unlikely to happen!) So, I'm nodding to the fact that I'm looking for excuses, bc I just really don't care about going!

I think you should leave at 9:30 and get there at 11 and leave around 2:30. Also, 2.5-3 hours for a play date is really long for a 2 year old.

My kids are now 4 and 6 and most of our play dates last 2-3 hours.

when we visit friends in NJ its for most of the day and night. I am not sure I would go for a few hours unless its for a special occasion say a bday party. they came out to LI for DD bday party and left right after.

I guess if they really wanted to meet up for a few hours we would suck it up and do it but for me the time traffic and tolls it really wouldn't be worth doing for a few hours.

I wouldn't go. It's not like an older kid who misses a friend that moved. If you're not close with this girl you'll likely never really see her again.

You pretty much wrote what's in my head! My daughter hasn't asked for her, but the friend's mom reached out to me.

Totally honest- I wouldn't go. I would let the friendship fizzle. It was nice of the mom to reach out, but it's not a friendship I would keep up.

ITA

By next month they probably won't remember each other. It would be different if you were good friends with the mom but, 1.5 hrs is a long drive for a playdate with someone you are just a casual acquaintance with.
