anyone experience this/thoughts?? 5 yr old reactions to toys

DD is five, for the longest time she really liked the Tangled movie, and really like Flynn Ryder. For valentines day we bought her the barbie size Tangled dolls and she said she didnt want them (in fact, her reaction was very serious and would say "i dont want them). She's not a barbie doll fan, so we thought that maybe that's why.

Then she became obsessed with the movie Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and LOVED the main character, Flint Lockwood. She would bring the books to her grandparents house and they had to be on her nightstand at night. DH and I thought that she had a "crush" on Flint, so we found a "flint" doll for her. Again, she refused it and actually cried to take it away. no idea what the deal was, but thought it was odd.

So now the new Inside Out movie is coming out. And she is SO excited to see the movie. My mom bought her a little action toy of one of the characters. She again got SO upset and refused the toy. Now, she LOVES action toys - she has TONS of them - everything from Dinos, to dragons to princesses and everything in between.

I dont know what to make of her reaction? i dont understand why she's not excited about them. when i ask her why, she just says "i just dont want it".

anyone experience this? any thoughts as to why this could be??

Are her other toys/action figures from TV shows or movies?

Maybe she's afraid they will come to life or something and it creeps her out.

some of them are from movies/tv, but most not. the ones that are she's had forever...seems this has been an "issue" within the last 6 months.

that's an interesting point though...

and now that i think about it...she had a similar reaction to when we got the Toy Story figures when she was 3....and those toys do "come to life" in the movie, so....interesting....

DS is younger than your DD, but has this reaction with new toys. He will usually refuse something new if it makes him nervous, but eventually his curiosity gets the best of him and he's fine.

He has a speech delay, so it's hard for him to express himself at times. But he's getting better, and was able to tell me when we were in Hallmark the other day that he was scared of the giant plush Snoopy.

I agree with kahlua716 that she may be afraid that they are real. She may not be able to separate the characters in the movies with the toys.

Yep i agree with pp. Im thinking she sees them on tv or in the movies and is afraid they will start talking to her.

okay..thanks guys...this actually makes me feel better. I was starting to get a bit nervous...she's 5 so i would think she would be old enough now, to understand that they wouldnt do that, but .then again....i guess she's still only 5. and she's had really odd fears at random points in life! lol

DD is the same exact way. She loves all of the Disney characters but they are forbidden by her in real life as dolls/figures. The few things we had were hidden or thrown away by her lol
