Increased frequent urination, problem or no?
Dd, age 4.5, has always held in her pee for hours. For the past week and a half she has been going very frequently.
There is no indication of a uti. She isn't in any discomfort and her pee looks normal. She always drinks a lot and eats a lot of fruits and veggies.
Do I call the ped?

ETA: she doesn't go overnight. Just a lot during the day.

Is she very thirsty? If so, that in conjunction with the constant urination I would probably get her sugar checked. That's how my friend was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.

I was going to tell you to have her sugar checked like PP said. My friend's daughter was going to the bathroom frequently at night. She is in nursing school so knew the signs and took her to the doctors to find out she was diabetic. Went from there to the hospital immediately.
Could be nothing at all, but just drinking more bc they're outside more. Doesn't hurt to check though.

She always drinks a lot, but would always hold it for a long time. One time before she was potty trained, she held it in for 18 hours!
Ok, thanks- I will call the ped tomorrow.

DS did the same thing at around the same age. Since I'm diabetic, that was of course my first thought. I did several blood sugar tests on him randomly, and his sugar was normal. It turned out that he was so worried about peeing himself, he would go basically every hour on the hour.
Still get checked, just to make sure, but if she doesn't pee overnight, it's not diabetes. It definitely sounds more like a conscious thought process.

DD2 has been peeing like crazy lately too, and I am going to call my doctor this morning. Does anyone know how long the sugar test results take? My doctor doesn't take blood in the office.

Technically, the test takes literally 5 seconds. (I test mine several times a day). However, depending on the lab, they may or may not tell you the results right there, and you'll have to go back to the doctor.

My dr said she can do a urine test, and it will take 2 days to get the results. Thanks for the info.

I took dd to the ped today. He said it's very common for kids her age to have a spastic bladder. He's not worried since they tested her urine and there's no infection and her sugar is fine. He said if it does become a big problem then there are meds to slow down the bladder.
She is also a little irritated "down there" so he said to use some baby powder and that might help too.
