EasT Islip schools. Give me the good, bad and ugly opinions. We are beginning to try and figure out where we want to eventually settle. Houses in IT seem to have what we are looking for size wise and tax wise.

Re: Islip Terrace

We are in IT, EI SD. Our girls aren't in school yet but my nephew goes to EI (5 th grade) and the schools are great. (He switched when they moved from amityville). They are highly rated in NYS. I don't find taxes so hot though. Lol. They are actually more than some areas of Nassau but you do get more house for yor money. We bought 3 yrs ago. We were between WI, west Babylon and EI and chose here. It's a small community and is pretty quiet.

Re: Islip Terrace

East Islip born, raised, and still live here. I think our schools are pretty good - maybe not as good as some of the taxpayers south of Montauk would have you think, but very good. Great sports programs, great music department, lots of activities. Many of the teachers in the district are FROM the area or still live in the area. I just think its a great place to live.

I was born and raised too...so were my parents and my husband and his family! lol

I grew up on Gwendolyn but my mom, her siblings, my husband and his family represent Great Village Chat Icon

I still have family and friends that are residing and raising kids in the school district.

One thing I will say while it is a wonderful town and school, there is a HIGH drug epidemic (high school age kids) I get that it's everywhere but I cannot tell you the amount of friends funerals I went to and ones still continue to happen everyday that I see on FB.

Re: Islip Terrace

My best friend bought in Islip Terrace, a street off Connetquot Ave. She loves her neighborhood and I do as well. Very quiet and quaint. Her daughter is only 2.5 though, so no real opinion on the schools as of yet.

I live in EI and love it. I also cant comment on schools though because my son is only 2, but I have family that grew up in the district and always have great things to say.

On the other hand, I have a work colleague who's sister in law is currently looking to move out of the district due to the schools...her kids are of school age...maybe due to the drug issues the above poster mentioned? Or maybe some other reasons, I am not sure.

I dont know, in my opinion, drugs can be abundant anywhere...and most schools around the area are all on the same playing field. Some say they think Islip is much better...but I am no expert.

I know several people who are very happy at the elementary school level.
My SIL worked at the high school for a bit and said they have a few problems up there; one she mentioned was a decent amount of bullying.
The East Islip Community Watch page talks about some kids in the neighborhood that are disrespectful, but I don't think that speaks to the district as a whole.

As far as drugs go, I work in a district with a large heroin problem. It's in a lot of schools, no matter what the socioeconomics of the area are.

Islip Terrace

I live in EI and am South of Montauk. I don't really know what it means that people south of Montauk think the schools are better than everyone else thinks?

Anyway- my daughter is only just finishing K, but so far I am very happy with my experience.

Thanks everyone I don't know how to phrase this without it sounding wrong but the drug thing is not my biggest concern. Long Island has an insane drug problem in all its high schools. The more affluent I find the worse it is. I remember it was the same growing up. It's up to us to steer our kids away from that.

I'm happy to hear that people are happy with the schools. Islip Terrace when we have been weighing all of our pros and cons has been the top area to date.

I meant that the ppl who live south of Montauk are a bit more uppity than the rest of the EI/IT and think the area is a little nicer than it actually is Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't mean YOU, but I grew up here, my mom grew up here, and it has ALWAYS been the case.

ETA - Bullying, yes. Snobbery, yes. Lots of that in the district, but overall good schools.

Re: Islip Terrace

I've lived in East Islip (south of Montauk but the farthest thing from uppity or a snob Chat Icon Chat Icon ). Been here for almost 13 years now and we love it. While I cant add much about the school district right now seeing as my 5 year old just completed the Kindergarten screening the other day, I have to say I have been soooo impressed with the faculty we have come across so far.
From what I know of IT, its a very small community but many functions/events, etc are tied to E. Islip.

I will agree on that part, I remember it being East Islip was a better area to live in than Islip Terrace and people had a way of being snobbish about it...anything North of the old Getty (CVS shopping center) and anything North of the Great River tracks.

And of course the elementary nicknames lol

I went to Jail For Kids (JFK)
ITJH and E.I. High

Same with massapequa. And that was when I was there 20 yrs ago. I'm sure it's worse now. Happens in most semi-affluent areas on LI, unfortunately.
