What home remedies did your parents have ??
The rubbing alchohol post had me thinking
My mother used to put a slice of RAW bacon on our splinters to "draw it out"
I also vividly remember my mother giving me "sugar water" bottles
And to help me sleep milk with melted butter in it at night ! I remember asking her to make it for me
Any others ???

Re: What home remedies did your parents have ??
some of this is going to sound horrible, and its going to be a wonder that more isn't wrong with me that already is
for colds she gave us, tea with honey and a a teaspoon of cognac
if we had a fever, she'd give us crushed up antibiotic mixed with sugar water on a spoon (I don't know how, but she always had a stash of antibiotics, she was like an antibiotic dealer)
milk with butter for sleep (seems to be a common one)
butter on any kind of burn, and on irritated skin like after I had my first upper lip wax
chicken soup with garlic and vinegar, to this day crave it when I get sick

Re: What home remedies did your parents have ??
This is not really a home remedy but my grandmother swore by Thantis lozenges. It was basically mercurochrome in a throat lozenge. I had frequent sore throats and this stuff really worked. I later did some reading and learned that many of the throat lozenges that our grandparents used contained painkillers that are now controlled substances. I never found out whether Thantis were in that category but I know they contained mercury. Antique collectors are now shelling out big bucks for the ads for this stuff!! My mom has strict instructions to hoard them for me if she ever finds them again!!!!!!

yes! I used to run when my mom took it out of the medicine cabinet! She always used it for scrapes/cuts.
Warm milk for sleeping (no butter) Alcohol on the gums for teething Rubbing alcohol on the chest for chest colds Butter for burns Mushy, bland rice/water mix with a little bit of lemon juice for upset stomachs (it tasted gross!)

now that's some funny sh!t...made my saturday morning for sure!
I laugh even harder as I think about me growing up, my parents always said, your ok...its not that bad, suuuuccckkk it up. We were never hurt enough for a reaction, ever. I clearly remember my sister getting her finger mangled in the hedge cutter, and my mom yelling...well your gonna have to drive urself to the hospital, I have to watch your sisters.

Re: What home remedies did your parents have ??
Mylanta and aquaphor for diaper rash hands down the quickest and best remedy.
clove oil for teething
aloe for cuts- my mom had an aloe plant and would break open a leaf and get the aloe for the cut.
Ginger ale for a stomach ache- although that's not a great one any more because it's the ginger that settles the stomach and now most soda have "ginger flavoring" not actual ginger. You have to check the labels

That stuff always made the cut look SO much worse than it even was, and it stunk
Calamine lotion and Vicks vapor rub was big too

Re: What home remedies did your parents have ??
Coming from India my family had tons of pretty odd remedies.
-Alcohol baths for fevers -raw egg yolks in the baby bottle to help baby sleep better at night -whiskey mixed with sugar for teething (its not that our gums didnt hurt anymore...we passed out from being drunk!!) -full body baby oil rub downs (come to realize it was just Nana giving us a massage and the oil made it easier to glide her hands on us) -If you had a belly ache from gas that you couldnt pass, my mother would fry an egg and make you smell it. I just think that the smell of the sulfur made you want to go LOL
There are so many others But the one that confuses me to this day was something my grandmother would do if we had a stomach ache not gas related. She would spray a strong perfume directly into our bellybutton. I have no idea why, but it worked.

My mother would always give us Won Ton Soup when we were sick! Got us cured in no time!
And also, apparently going toTennis with her (on our sick days) made us better quickly! The smell of tennis balls still reminds me of my Mom!!

My MIL insists on rubbing a warm hard boiled egg on my son's face bruise since she says that it will help heal it.
