Water before six months debate..

Is there a real reason one should not feed an infant water before six months besides lack of nutrition?

Water before six months debate..

None that I've heard of or read, it's mainly because they don't want the baby to get full of water... I also read in the last week or so about how water poisoning is actually easier for infants to get because they are so small... don't know how true it is, never would have thought of it.

It's primarily b/c you don't want your baby to fill up on water and replace formula, which has nutrients.

I was feeding DS water by 5 months, though, because he was getting more than enough formula and it was a hot summer. When he didn't have enough wet diapers, he got water because I could tell he was getting dehydrated.

Too much causes an imbalance in sodium levels. There really is no reason to give them water if they are drinking breastmilk or formula.

There are also a lot of germs in public pools. A child I know developed molloscum which many children get but at that age it's hard to give medicine too.

I've given DS water since he was 2 months old. My pediatrician recommended giving him a very small amount (1 oz or so) to hold him off if he was trying to eat too early.

I think she was referring to giving them water to drink

OP- it is mainly because there is no need for it - they get all their fluids through the formula or BM and if they fill up on water, they may not eat enough
Also, as a PP mentioned, too much fluids and water can lead to water poisoning/potassium/sodium imbalance

Water before six months debate..

Their kidneys are immature and can't process it properly.

If they're hungry, give them formula or BM when they're hungry!

I have read the kidney's aren't fully functioning and cannot filter out all minerals in water etc. I would wait until at least 8mo.

Plus, you don't want your LO filling up on water vs. formula or breast milk.

Water before six months debate..

It has nothing to do with filling up on water vs formula.

It's bc their kidneys aren't developed enough yet and can cause damage.

I've read and heard both.... And the kidney issue must have been what I read regarding the water poisoning.

Water before six months debate..

My pediatrician said to give her 1 oz of water boiled and cooled to help regulate her poop. But to mix it with 3oz of formula because otherwise she can't digest it properly.

My ped reccomends an ounce or so in between feedings if you want, helps with constipation and keeps them hydrated in the warm weather. My baby is 2 months old

If I did this my DS would be 30lbs by 6 months old lol. He would always eat if he learned that acting like he was hungry all the time would get him food.
