I opened a regular youth account with all her money from her baptism at Bethpage bc at the time they had the best interest rates (this was 6 months ago) I also have been looking into starting one of those accounts that takes out before taxes right from your check for colleges savings.. totally forgot the name, but I was talking to the guy at BOA about it a few weeks ago.

529 College Savings Account.
Everything we read said it's one of the best choices to save for your child's education. As we have more money available through the years we might look into other investments but for now all we have it the 529 accounts for each of our kids.

529 from Vanguard for us, my grandfather did a 529 with his wealth manager, and we also have a regular youth savings account for any gifts he receives, and we gave him a few hundred to start off with as a "birthday" gift when he was born.

529 through vanguard, it was free to setup through vanguard that is why we went with them and the interest on a 529 is incredible plus if used for college it's tax free
Each of my kids has two, one we contribute to and one my parents contribute to, all monetary gifts they recieve go into their account, we also have a Roth IRA for each child

529 but its not the one that you can expense on taxes. Its the more aggressive one.

If you don't mind me asking, how do young kids have a Roth IRA? Don't they require proof of earned income?

Re: spinoff to saving for college...
We have a regular brokerage account (mix of stocks and funds I chose). I have an IRA in my name that we may use if needed. Will never do 529. Private sector is so unstable , and people get laid off left and right when they near a certain age (50+) ! Worst case scenario (for us) would be a job loss and then having big money tied up in 529. At least if one of us is not working, we could try for financial aid and grants.
