A "vacation" with kids isn't a vacation but truth be told, I don't really like leaving my kids. I have in the past and while I do have a good time with just DH, I miss them the whole time. My DD is especially sensitive when we leave and while of course she is always fine with my parents and ILs, I would rather take them with us if possible. It is totally personal preference.

Vacation with or without your LO?
I have been away for work for a few days here and there and DH & I went away for 2 nights for my 40th bday but other than that our vacations involve the entire family. I couldn't see not taking my DS. He loves the beach and water so its not work......
I am going to Tasmania in a month and it is a work retreat and am staying for a few extra days...I figured I am not going to get back anytime soon so I needed to take advantage of it but I am already dreading the fact I won't get to even talk to DS much because of hte time difference.

Vacation with or without your LO?
DD is 3 and we've been away only twice without her, for a night or two, one of them being a family emergency in MD. Once in a while she will stay at my parents house for the night, but as far as vacation, she comes with us. My parents can only handle her for a certain period of time. She can be very high maintence! LOL.

My kids are 3 and 1 and I haven't left them yet. I would not be willing to for at least another year. When they are a little older we will absolutely consider going away for a long weekend without them but never more than a few nights, and never for a "real" vacation for two reasons:
1. Even if our families are happy to watch them, caring for two children is a huge imposition and I'd be too uncomfortable with it to do it.
2. My children are my family, my favorite little people. Dh and I want to share all of our fun and interesting experiences with them. It wouldn't feel right to go somewhere and not have them with us.

If you are truly looking to go on vacation, leave DS home. It is not a vacation at all with them there unless you hire a babysitter. We have had friends that go to Beaches because they trust their nanny service or whatever. Personally, if I wanted to relax, DS would be left at home. I Would absolutely miss him but it's not something a few cocktails and a massage couldn't cure.

We've gone away anywhere from 1-4 nights. We've done a couple of trips "just because" but, usually it's 1-2 nights for a wedding.

I personally could not vacation without my kids yet. I am a FTWM, so when I have time off work I want to be with my kids. When DH and I go out without them we spend the whole time just talking about them anyway! We really love taking family vacations, and our joy is watching the kids have a good time.

I couldn't disagree more. Vacation is time for MY FAMILY, away from work and all the normal daily stressors. I want to be with my daughter as much as possible, especially in a nice relaxing atmosphere, not bogged down with schedules or routines.

This just makes me sad to read. How is a vacation NOT a vacation? Away from the norm, seeing new places, seeing the kids have new experiences or just see Mom and Dad in constant play mode...it's a vacation for everyone.
