Sort of Spin-Off to the Puffins Cereal post

I'm so totally grossed out by seeing a dead mouse in a bag of cereal!! Chat Icon Chat Icon A few months ago I actually found a perfectly in tact, dead (HUGE) beetle in my son's Gerber Graduates meal. I NEVER bought one again. I was so skeeved!!! Now, after seeing the dead mouse it just makes me realize how disgusting processed food is. I've been trying to limit processed foods in our house and I cook a lot BUT I was curious to see how some of you eliminated these things from your diet/house.

Do you cook/bake everything yourself?

Certain things I try to do myself. For example, I bake homemade cookies and cakes instead of the store bought mixes. I make big batches of homemade waffles/pancakes for the kids and freeze them so I always have them on hand. I've even made my own ice cream, fudge pops, and ice pops!! I try to cook dinner every night as well so I know what's going in our food.

What else can I do??? I feel like I want us all to eat better and stay away from all of the processed junk with ingredients I can't even pronounce but sometimes it's hard. I'm open to any suggestions, what do you guys do?

The only thing I find with the homemade goodies like bread, cookies, cakes, etc............it obviously doesn't last as long. I was just curious if anyone had any tricks to keep food that is homemade last longer or even good substitutions for the things we do need to use on a daily basis that we can't always make ourselves like syrup. (as an example)

I just have a hard time trying to cut everything out because it's (of course) so much easier to just but the packaged stuff but it's also such garbage. It's hard too because I have picky eaters and naturally, they like all of the cr@p stuff out there.

Honestly, unless you are growing it, harvesting it and raising it yourself you just never know. Even "homemade" cake requires factory processed flour, sugar, butter, eggs, etc. etc. Gross things can fall into that just as easily as the "packaged" foods.

You'll find bugs in fruits and veggies too. Once I found a green cricket alive in my bag of Soinach. He went outside. And in lettuce I've found tiny flies. Another time a work curled up in a pistachio shell (didn't eat pistachios for about 8-10 years). And the worst in college a maggot looking worm curled up in the cap of my snapple!!! They gave me w million free coupons and a free snapple sweatshirt.

This , by making things yourself you are avoiding chemicals and additives but not critters . In fact I find sometimes bugs and such are more interested in the healthy stuff since they don't want the chemicals either.

Exactly. There is merit in making your own from-scratch items. You're avoiding additives and preservatives. The food is healthier and tastes better, but if you're doing it to avoid critters you'll be at a loss. Like PP said, you'll need base ingredients like flour, sugar, dairy, etc. A flour mill isn't going to be free from pests any more than a processed junk food factory will be. The same with a sugar refinery. You can make your own applesauce, jams, etc. and you can find worms and other gross vermon in your produce. Even milk and eggs from free range farms are produced by animals whose diet includes eating the very things that gross us out. The same goes for meat, poultry, and fish (bacteria, parasites, etc.)

Even if you're growing your own produce and wheat and processing it yourself you'll find critters attracted to your crops. I read that the FDA allows a certain number of rat hairs in peanut butter because there's just no way to prevent it from happening. You could avoid that grossness by making your own peanut butter, but the peanuts will have come in contact with the rodents and pests anyway (even if you grew and harvested them yourself). It's just a fact of life. These critters need to eat just like we do, so they'll be attracted to the same foods that we eat. They will always come in contact with our food source at some point (from seed to finished product).

This is crazy. I read the Puffins thing when it was first posted and when I went to Stop & Shop yesterday morning in Oceanside as soon as you walk in the door there was a huge display. Gross
