Stubborn 3 year old and Potty Training

I cannot believe my 3.5 year old still has a ton of accidents and just doesn't care. I know everyone says to throw away the diapers or pull ups. I have done everything... 3 days, naked in the house all day (well, shirt and socks), but he still doesn't care. He's ok with pee'ing at home when he has no bottoms on. I put underwear on him the other day and kept asking him to go. I work from home so I would check on him in the other room once in a while... he was soaked and playing like nothing happened. Did not care he was wet. Even trying #2 he will go a little while standing and I find him running to the wipes to wipe his tushy. He tells me there's poop in his tushy, but doesn't care to sit on the toilet.
He is very smart, but very stubborn. I have taken away dessert, computer, toys, etc. Tried sticker chart. WHen he gets a sad face or I take something away he just says... Ok, I'll try tomorrow. Like he knows. Me, my parent,s IL's, etc all have promised gifts. My mom bought him a huge Peppa Pig house and showed it to him. Told him when he goes he'll get it. He knows and will say... Ok, I get Peppa Pig house when I am potty trained. I told him to go and he says... maybe tomorrow.
There are 3 kids in his class not potty trained yet. Walks to the bathroom there when the teacher takes him and says he doesn't have to go even though his friends are going. I keep him in a pull up at school bc I can't do that to the teachers. Twice I sent him in underwear and he had 3 accidents that day never telling the teacher.
Sorry so long... I don't think he'll ever go! LOL

ETA - he has a 5 year old brother and has watched him go a ton of times and still has no effect. Chat Icon

some kids just take more time than others. Don't worry, he'll go when he's ready. I know it seems like he won't..but he will. He'll surprise you one day!

Thanks! That's exactly what I hear and other parents who had late potty trainers told me the same thing.

My son is 4 and the same thing. He just doesn't care. I've done everything! He will go when i take him into the bathroom but then minutes later he'll pee again in his pull up or underwear or on my floor. He absolutely refuses to sit on the potty to poop. He stands to pee now. I am at a loss and have literally given up. Im convinced he will be in kindergarten and still in pull ups!

Re: Stubborn 3 year old and Potty Training

Both of my boys were 3.5. Both went from a diaper to underwear in a day -
I just didn't see the point or benefit to forcing the issue and 'training' them any earlier than they were completely ready.
I can count on 1 hand the number of accidents they have had -
IMHO, leave him alone, he'll do it when he's ready - with mine, anyway, it more of a control thing - like, yeah, I CAN do it, but it will be on my terms Chat Icon
So, fine. B/c when they did it - there was no 'day but not night trained' 'pee not not poop trained' 'pull up for the car, pull up at the mall, pull up to go to bed' etc - it was just done. No stress, no aggravation -

Don't kill yourself - he won't be in diapers forever

This is my 3.5 year old daughter too. Except she doesn't have accidents, she just holds her pee the whole day until she basically explodes and then she gets very upset. I've tried a lot of things to motivate her but nothing works. She just doesn't care! It's so frustrating because I know she is capable but she just doesn't want to. I think she knows it's the last thing she has control over. I'm so over it though.

I am a believer in when they are ready they will do it. DS #2 did it in 1 day at 3 3/4. Before that like your son he would pee anywhere and wouldn't care. We kept telling him after xyz it will be time to say good bye to diapers and he did. He is like that with most things though. Other son was 3.5 and never looked back either. He would wear pull ups because he liked the feel but never went in them.

I feel your pain. My twins are almost 3.5 and I swear I don't think they'll ever potty train. We tried the 3 day method (but did it for a whole week-worst vacation DH and I ever had), naked, rewards, books, etc. They do not care. Seriously they stood in their underwear peeing while staring at us!

Both teachers say it is a control thing. My one son hates when we take him to the bathroom to change his pull-up, kicking, screaming. This is seriously the hardest thing.

I am giving up on it for now. We still talk about it and try to see if they will go but they are very stubborn and resistant. Everyone says when they are ready, it will just happen. God I hope so.

I'm hoping in the warmer weather, things turn around. No advice, just letting you know I can commiserateChat Icon

Re: Stubborn 3 year old and Potty Training

Thanks everyone for your responces. Nice to hear I'm not the onl one bc I read so many stories on hear of kids potty trained in days at 2. Ugh!
My 5 yr old was 3 years anda couple of months. He was trained in a week and that's with some receptive delays. DS2 understands everything and won't potty train. I swore he'd be so easy and done fast. Wrong! He's going to be 4 this summer.
I know it'll happen. I can't wait to get rid of diapers!

This sounds like DD. She'll be 3 next month and she has been more than capable for a long time but she refuses. If I try to bring it up and push the potty she will just hold it ALL DAY even in a diaper. I realized I need to just let it go and wait for her to be ready but it's so frustrating bc I know she can do it. She's just scared for some reason. The only thing that makes me feel better is knowing that most likely once she decides to do it it should be easy and I don't anticipate many accidents but who knows when that will be.Chat Icon
