Formula to Milk at 12 Months:

DH took Julian for his appointment the other day. He is eleven months.

Doc said, ok when he turns a year no more formula - go to whole milk.

DH says alrighty.

Chat Icon

This is why I go with him to appointments. Wouldn't the OBVIOUS questions be: OK great about the milk - how much? How many times a day? We warm the formula, but we should give him milk cold? Should we go from bottle to sippy cup? Do we slowly ween him off the formula to the milk or cold turkey?

I love DH but Chat Icon

Anyway - those of you who have done this or know about it, can you fill me in? I'm going to see the doc again next week and I will surely ask him b/c I'm sure opinions will vary a bit but I'm just wondering in the meantime!

THANKS Chat Icon

basically, you give the same amount, temperature, and frequency as you did with formula.

you may need to phase milk in - so give 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk for a few days, then do half and half for a few days, etc. My dr suggested to phase it in for a month or two (ie: start at 10 or 11 months) but we didn't really do it for more than a week or two total.

Good luck

Honestly there is no right or wrong answer, as every child is different. You just have to choose a method and go with it to see what works!

Its just milk Whoel milk. There is no right or wrong...depends on how your son with drink it.

IMO do not warm it cause you will have to continue to do it FOREVER!!!! Bottle or sippy it doesn't matter.....some won't drink it out of a sippy so do whatever.

You will figure out how much he will drink so at first wing it. Milk is not like formula so you will not be relying on it for much nutrition.

At 12 months, her ped said she shouldn't have more than 24 oz. of milk a day. I just started giving her whole milk and thankfully, she liked it.
And Chat Icon Chat Icon about your DH. Mine is the same way. He used to take her to all her appointments and he'd tell me what happened and I'd be like: don't you ask questions??
Too funny.

Formula to Milk at 12 Months:

At 12 months, we tried whole milk and DS was not happy. We phased in as a pp said. Started with 2oz milk an 8oz formula. Did that for 3 days and then went to 5oz each. Did that for a few days and then did 8oz milk 2oz formula- that only lasted a day and then he was on full milk. We transitioned from bottle around 14 months. DH did that slowly with him too because the first day I gave him just a sippy, he threw it to the floor and it went EVERYWHERE. We took away the bottle in the morning first- DH gave DS half of his milk in a sippy and half in a bottle. Took him 3 days to get rid of the bottle. I transitioned night time bottle- one day I said "no more bottles" and that was it. I think it was okay since he'd already transitioned morning.

As far as warming- that's up to you. We started giving cold formula to prep him for cold milk around 8 months. Everything before that was room temp- he never had warmed formula.

You know what's best for your child- transition, no transition, warming, not warming, sippy, or bottle!

We transitioned. We had a container of formula left around 11.5 months so we started with 2 oz milk then the rest formula. Next week 4 oz milk then rest formula. We got to 2oz formula and rest milk when the container was almost empty. Dd is still on a wake-up and sleep bottle so those I warm. The milk in her sippy is cold.

Edited- yes we definitely transitioned him instead of going cold turkey. we added an ounce of milk to his bottle per week, so we transitioned slowly. I found out later on that DS had a milk allergy so it was good that I didn't switch him cold turkey!

you give whole milk and it depends on your LO
i tried 1/2 milk 1/2 formula but dd didnt like it so i had to transition slowly
we started out that every bottle she got we replaced one ounce of formula with milk (the milk was from the fridge and we used powder formula so it was room temp water). after a week or so, we would increase to 2 ounces etc until she was on full milk

There's no rule - its just milk.

I started subbing a bottle of milk at 10 months to get him used to it. He will be 1 in October. I give organic whole milk.

Re: Formula to Milk at 12 Months:

When my kids hit 12 months, they started eating like real people. Milk is just another part of their daily nutrition like ours is. I got rid of bottles, they'd have a sippy with a meal or as a snack here and there. Think food pyramid and go from there Chat Icon They also just had it cold and I didn't phase it in or anything, it was more like "Happy Birthday, time for three square meals a day, snacks and your two drink options are water and milk... enjoy being 1" Chat Icon

2 weeks before she turned one, we did half milk, half formula and then by 1, all milk and she did fine..we were doing straw cups prior during the day and by 14 months, all bottles were gone (the night was the last one)

Honestly... The day dd turned one we switched immediately to milk and went from bottles to sippy cups (we were practicing with these for awhile). Dd had no issues with the transition. I'm sure this won't work for everyone.... We were just lucky she did so well.

Oh... she drinks milk in the am and at night. She drinks about 20oz a day. Give or take... but she loves milk.

we started transitioning at about 11 months 1 week. he normally got 6oz bottles of formula so the first week i gave him bottles with 4oz of formula and 2oz of milk. then the next week i switched it to 4oz milk, 2oz formula and then went totally to milk. we also cut out a bottle around the 11 month mark (he was still getting 4 bottles a day) and i gave him an afternoon sippy instead of the bottle. eventually i phased out the morning bottle and gave a sippy and now we just did the same thing with his night bottle. so, now he's almost 13 months and he gets a sippy of milk with breakfast, lunch and dinner. water in between meals and with snacks :) hope that makes sense!

Also just a note--before you switch, just make sure he's eating a pretty balanced diet. Milk is not equal to BM/formula, so it's not going to be a full nutritional replacement. He'll need to get in fruits, veggies, protein, whole grains, etc in other forms every day.

I don't think that's so bad, we switched at 12 months. Just started giving her milk one day and that was it. No big deal

Re: Formula to Milk at 12 Months:

I went cold turkey from formula to milk with my DD. DS I transitioned over about a week because we switched him to milk earlier than DS, he started with milk at 10 months.

Never measured how much specifically, just filled my DD's bottles at each meal and gave her one before bed. She didn't drop bottles until 17 months but DS dropped them all at a year old so he just got his milk sippy at meals.

Warmed DD's because she hated cold milk, DS got it cold.

There really aren't any rules, do what your child likes best. Cold, warm, bottle, sippy..........it really doesn't matter. Chat Icon
