Having a baby at 35

First, let me say that I think the term "advanced maternal age" sounds crazy for someone that delivers at the age of 35- but of course it is on my mind.

Because of DH's family history we have always had the genetic testing. We've decided that we want 3 kids (I am 33 now) and have even discussed going for #3 this year but also I wouldn't mind enjoying DD2 as the "baby" for another year.

If you delivered your LO at 35 and older, did you have to go for any extra tests? I have plenty of friends who delivered past 35 with no complications but there were also a few times when a friend had major scares due to the extra tests and ended up with a beautiful healthy baby.

I delivered baby #3 when I was 36. I didn't have any extra tests or extra monitoring because of my age.

I had my 3rd at 37. My doctor offered the amnio but I didn't want it and that was that...no extra testing.

i am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my second and am 35. the only extra test i had was the MaterniT21 test, which was offered to me because of my age, but not required. i decided to have it (simple blood test) and the results indicated the chances of the baby having chromosomal abnormalities were lower than typical for my age. my OB and the genetic counselor who set up the test for me told me that 35 is the new 40, as far as women having babies. neither one pushed any extra tests, just told me what my options were.

I think ADvanced maternal age is concidered to be over 40 now. I had my 1st at 35 and my 2nd at 38 not one of my doctors mentioned my age as a concern.

I delivered DD at 38. I will deliver this baby shortly before my 40th birthday.

With DD, we chose to have an amnio.

With this pregnancy, I had the Verifi (wasn't available when I was pregnant with DD). I then had an amnio, simply because the Verifi, and its counterparts (MaterniT21, Panorama, etc...), only test for a select few trisomies; an amnio tests for much more.

All of this was a personal choice though.

I had my second at 36 and my doctor did not mention my age once. I did not do any extra testing.

I had my DS at 38. I refused any tests above and beyond the normal testing done at 12 and 16 weeks. We have no family history of genetic disorders so I saw no need to have any extra testing done unless there was a reason.

Both the 12 and 16 weeks testing came back awesome with not even a hint of something being wrong so we opted out of anything further.

My DS is perfect, healthy as can be!

I delivered at 36 and chose to have an amnio.
I wasn't at any high risk other than my age but DH and I wanted 100% certainty of what, if anything, we were dealing with, not percentages like the other tests offered (at the time the new, less invasive test they offer now, (Materni something?) wasn't offered.

I had no complications at all in my pregnancy, a textbook L&D and a perfectly healthy DD.

I had DS 2 at 36 1/2 and had the same tests that I had when I was pregnant with DS 1 (delivered at 34 1/4).

My OB felt there was no need for the amnio (the maternity21 wasn't around yet) based on the results of the other tests. I did have to sign a waiver that I refused the amnio though.

I delivered DS at 38. I didn't have to have any tests but I chose to have an amnio and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I had a rough pregnancy but it would have been the same if I was 22 or 42. I will have another if the stars align.

I am 37 and I just had my daughter a month ago. I did not have any additional testing due to my age.

I had my first at 32 and my second at 35 just shy of my 36 birthday no extra test delievery just like my first natural no issues health babies

I had #2 at 35 and #3 at 39 - I never had an amnio but did have the Harmony test for #3 - no issues

Reply I had my 3rd at 38. We did not do any additional tests. It was an option I'm sure but my doctor didn't emphasize anything because of my age. He was also aware of my opinion that regardless of any test the pregnancy would continue.

I delivered ds at 35 & needed no extra testing. Had such an easy pregnancy & had a healthy baby.

I was 35 when I delivered. They suggested an amino but I declined since my NT scan was fine. My mom had my brother at 40 and had a great pregnancy. She had GD and high blood pressure but had that when she had my sister and i at 22 and 25. She did have an amino. My cousin had her son at 42, also no complications. If I had another I'd be about 38/39 by the time we are ready.

They used the words "advanced maternal age" but whatever!

I had a GREAT pregnancy....even was able to VBAC

I say go for it when you want to and don't let age sway your decision.

I delivered DD at 38. I had gotten the MaterniT21 because she had a persistant right umbilical vein and it was a marker for Down Syndrome.

I delivered DS at 39 and will be 41 when this LO is born in Sept. With DS I dudnt do any special tests. Maternit21 and counterparts were just coming out and not covered at the time. I did NT scans and anatomy scan. NT scan scared us with really bad odds for Down Syndrome. But we were at peace with whatever the outcome. Didn't want to risk Amnio. Anatomy scan showed all was perfect.

This time, we did NT scans and also did Maternit21 (simple blood draw and covered by insurance). Long two week wait but was happy to find out our risk we very low. Perk of that test was finding out sex at just 14 weeks.

I still hate swing "Advanced Maternal Age" on my chart.....but....it is what it is!

I will delivering my ds a month after I turn 35...because of that I was offered the materni21 test and my insurance covered it because of being 35 at time of delivery...other than that my doctors made no mention of my age and I was happy to be offered that test
