Is this crazy?

Dd is 3 weeks old and I am breastfeeding with minimal supplementing of formula. So far we have been very lucky . Where she sleeps and eats pretty much on a 2-3 hr Schedule. I let her set the pace.
Lately dh is saying that I need to get her on a better schedule cause @ night she is cluster feeding from 7-10pm instead of the early am hours and that isn't right. That
I should give her formula at that time instead of bf cause that is better. And he can sleep. (grrrrr)
Am I wrong when I say it shouldn't be done yet? I don't know if she really is hungry or just wants the comfort also.
She sleeps at night for 4 hrs at a time and to me that's good.
How do you put a 3wk old on a sleep schedule?? I think he's crazy. Our am I?

My DD comfort nursed all day every day at the beginning. That's just the way it's going to be for a while. Yeah it's super annoying, but it will help build your supply. It should get better at about 6 weeks, hang in there!

As far as giving formula to help sleep better, that's a myth. My mom told me this and early on and I would supplement at night. Didn't work. My DD just wanted booby. That's just what newborns want, can't really do anything about it.

There was no schedule at that age. Everything was on demand. And it is totally normally for bf babies to cluster feed before bed time.

The night time cluster feeding is totally normal and your dd is sleeping FANTASTICALLY if she is sleeping for 4 hour stretches at three weeks old! I have never heard of cluster feeding in the morning, so I wonder where your husband got the impression that that was the norm.

He's crazy. Also, husbands often revert back into children when their wives have babies. Tell him to invest in some earplugs and leave you alone.

If you are successful with BFing, do whatever you need to do to keep the baby happy and full. Sleeping for 4 hours at a time at that age is good.

I didn't breastfeed I did pump for a short period of time for both of my DC. For both of them I did have them on a schedule that early. My doctor recommended me feeding them every 2-3 hours during the day (I stuck closer to 3 hours unless they really wanted it before that) and let them sleep as long as they wanted to at night. at the beginning I got only about 3-4 hours but both of my DC have been sleeping through the night since about 8 weeks. not sure if that's possible with breastfeeding babies though

As far as a schedule, we started trying to keep her naps a little shorter in the evening, and I try to keep her awake from about 7-9. I give her a bath, we snuggle and play a little, etc. That way she is sleepy when we put her down for the night. I also try and be really boring at night and just feed her and put her back down and I don't talk to her or play with her.

Since we started that, we get one long stretch of sleep from about 9pm until 1am, and then she eats and sleeps until about 5am.

Thanks everyone.that's what I thought. Dd #1 ate all the time to the point it was hard to go out for long periods without my pump.
Lol it's funny but it's true how husbands revert back to kids themselves. This one is a dream compared to the first at this point. And if I do supplement I have to pump because I don't want to lose my supply.

Sounds like she's right on track! She's probably sleeping so well at night bc she's cluster feeding before hand. It's also normal for your supply to be highest in the morning so there would be no need to cluster feed if she's getting a nice big feeding in then.

My DS is 4 weeks and EBF and cluster feeds starting at 5:30pm and goes until 8:30pm, pretty much every hour. Then he has a few good stretches of sleep, and cluster feeds again from 5am-8am.

It's totally normal. You really need to follow their cues when they are that little. The cluster feeding could also be a growth spurt and it increases your supply to meet the needs of a growing baby.

Even if at some point in the next few weeks you notice baby is on a kind if schedule, the second you notcie it changes to a new one. Then another and another!
