I love this so much! Our parties look way closer to the "then" than the now.

We had a homemade cake. Paper Goods from the Dollar Store. Games were throwing a bean back into a empty pain can, those old school cardboard blocks and painting $1 birdhouses from Michael's. Food was simple and store bought/homeamde (mini sandwiches, fruits, veggies & dips, chips & pretzels). Kids played outside half the time! Gave out books for favors. Everyone had a blast!

Birthdays then and now

I went to a party where the hostess sent custom photo thank you cards. Each guest got one with pictures of their children at the party and then had her son sign each one. I jokingly told her that we couldn't be friends anymore because there's no way she's getting a custom photo thank you from us.

Hey at least she sent a thank you card. 99% of people don't even bother sending them (rude IMO)

Re: Birthdays then and now

I am so over the tremendous tutu/tulle skirts for little girls, my dds have never worn them for a party and never will, I have no idea why they just annoy me,
so far we have had their parties at home, one year we did rent a pony for pony rides and this year we are borrowing a bouncy house from a friend so we do some over the top things but I have never done a candy table, we get a hero, make macaroni for the kids and get a cake from carvel

Re: Birthdays then and now

That was great- so true!
I almost feel guilty doing another simple little backyard birthday party for my 3 year old because all the moms that I invite (new & old friends & some cousins) have these elaborate parties for their toddlers.
Makes me wonder if they think I'm being cheap but I just don't think it's necessary & I would drive myself into a panic trying to make everything perfect if I did a big thing.

Yes and no. A lot of what she described sounds like a first birthday, which is obviously a bigger celebration. Things like a crazy fancy cake and candy bar for a second birthday is imo overboard. Growing up in the 80's all my birthdays were at places though, just like I have my kids'. I had bowling, amusement park, plaster painting, skating, etc. My kids have similar parties but I don't bother with any of the pinterest extras. If a place comes with free invites and favors, I'm all over it. Cake always comes from BJs.
