tubes in ears

Our ENT rec. getting tubes in DS's ears, as well as removing his adenoids (recurring ear infections and his adenoids are enlarged).

Can you give me he good, the bad and the ugly if your DC had tubes put in.

Any limitations for them afterwards?

Re: tubes in ears

our experience was amazing. The only down side is the 20 minutes when anesthesia is wearing off is hard for mom cause kid is crying. (Other then that no side effects, eating and drinking 30 min later, happy and watching tv.

Recovery was immediate for DS. No limitations... no worries

No ear infection since (1 year in april since tubes)

Don't hesitate, life will be better for all

tubes in ears

Fantastic.. BEST THING I've EVER DONE!
I had hers done at 17m and only one ear infection since then and she's 5! We did get plugs for her ears for bath time.

But really its super duper fast (15mins) and best thing ever. I did not have her adenoids taken out. Wasn't even mentioned.

My did didn't really cry for anything but food afterwards. It was when we got home it got crazy but she went into surgery with an ear infection but I thought it was just her being sore. It wasn't until 3 days later I took her back in that we found out her infection had come back (they had drained it on the surgery table). Once we got that under control it was a BREEEEZE

Re: tubes in ears

Best thing we ever did for our dd. She really suffered with non stop ear infections. I was afraid to put them in her ear but it went really well and the whole thing was over in under 20 mins and she was absolutely fine. She only had 1 infection with the tubes in. Some drs want you to put ear plugs in when they are in water ours didn't and she was fine.

Re: tubes in ears

DS has tubes put in and adenoids removed in January. He was 22 months. He did great. When he came out he was awake but a little whiney. He basically just wanted the IV out of his hand! I held him and they gave him a bottle of sugar water. After he kept that down they gave him juice. We had to stay in recovery for about an hour and a half after surgery just to make sure he was ok from the anesthesia. He slept the car ride home and took a 3 hour nap when we got home. When he woke up he ate and watched some cartoons. He was very mushy that day. About an hour later he went to bed for the night. No restrictions. He was very tired though afterwards. He was completely fine the next day. Best decision we ever made. I haven't been in the doctors office since before the surgery (b4 surgery we were there every other week!) He is talking so much better and is just happier!

Re: tubes in ears

Thanks so much for the feedback. I was just hoping to hear it wasnt a traumatic experience, which is seems like it wasnt for anyone :). Ds is in swimming, so I'll have to find out about ear plugs.

yes, ask your ENT because mine said no ear plugs needed, but some do require it

This was our experience too. My son was 11 months. His speech immediately took off and he's only had drainage once since then.

My dr gave his blessing for swimming---no ear plugs needed.

Good luck!

i agree! best choice i made for my son was to get the tubes! i did his just before his first birthday and he hasnt had an ear infection since!

i also agree that right after surgery is hard ~ he cried and clung to me but he fell asleep on the ride home and woke up happy and himself! good luck! it will be fine!

tubes in ears

Two of my boys have had tubes and adenoids in one surgery

the recovery from adenoids is a little more than tubes- they have a restricted diet for a week or so

ear plugs - I have found is really dependent on the kid - my older son will get an infection if he gets any water in his ears- his twin brothers are fine without

it was very helpful in hearing and breathing

my kids still can get ear infections - but they don't hurt them and I know right of way because they leak out the ear

there hearing changed so much from the tubes - definitely worth it
