Moms of thumb suckers

Dd had been sucking her thumb since about one month old, she is going to be 6 months next week. The problem now is she has bad eczema and her poor thumb is all dry and cracked from her sucking on it so much. Plus she always has her hands in mouth too, so they are always wet. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I wanted to know if there is anything I can put on it to help that is safe. The ped office said to put the gross tasting stuff on it, but I don't want to do that. She also doesn't take a pacifier, so I can't use that as a sub. Any suggestions?

My daughter did that and it was just the sucking that caused it to get dry. We would just put aquaphor on it and vasaline. It went away as she got older and only sucked it at naps and bedtime.

I was going to say aquaphor too but I don't know how much can actually be ingested... what about some kind of olive/vegetable oil to moisturize? Obviously, that can be eaten...? <totally making this up!>

I put lanolin on her thumb. It's soothing for the skin and meant to be injested since it is made to soothe while breast feeding.

I would try coconut oil. Safe if ingested.

Thank you soooo much! I knew I could probably get an answer here. I am going to try the lanolin. I didn't even think of that!

I would try the same. I wouldn't really want to use anything else. You should look into it but I have read that it you shouldn't ingest lanolin or petroleum used in vaseline or aquaphor.

I use lanolin on my 19 month old thumb, it also was dry and crackly. My ped recommended this over aquaphor

I put sports tape and wrapped it around DS hand.
Broke the habit.

Recently he has been nail biting.
I'm going to get the nasty tasting stuff next.
