I'm filling out the ped's questionnaire before DD's appointment tomorrow and this is definitely not a strength for DD. I don't know if the questions are just unrealistic or if DD is a little behind.

She uses a fork sometimes and can skewer things that are soft enough and bring them to her mouth. With a spoon, she'll dip it in (usually yogurt) and bring it to her mouth but often upside down and much of it winds up in her lap. She definitely ins't able to scoop and doesn't pay any attention to whether the fork or spoon is sideways or upside down. Does that sound normal at this point? I probably need to let her practice more but it would take her an hour to eat a yogurt and most of it wouldn't make it in her mouth.

Let her practice more. Take off the clothes in the beginning.

I stopped feeding DC early... DD really uses a spoon well from before 18 months (but she is DC #2). She loves soup, so we give her a bowl and let her at it.

ETA: There is nothing wrong with your kid: it's just a matter of practice. I take those milestones with a grain of salt!

That's definitely normal - DS is the same way (and I believe they are close in age). Sometimes he lifts the food with his fingers and puts it on the spoon/fork or feeds himself with his hand and the spoon/fork at the same time.

DS has gotten better using a spoon with a lot of practice but he still doesn't understand the concept of a fork really at all. It's mostly my fault because he hasn't had much practice with a fork. I would say your DD is right on track.

Thanks ladies! I'll let her practice more and just be prepared for messes and all. Wish I'd thought to strip her down while the weather was warmer.
