"I want to go home" when out

DS is 4 years old. Pretty happy boy and likes going out, but after some time he just comes to me and tells me it's time to go home. No fear of being out and usually nothing set it off. Anyone have this too with their LO?
It happens just about every time we are out. Maybe once in a while something happens like he got hurt playing or the other kids didn't want to play what he wanted. I get that and we talk him into staying. Just happens out of nowhere. At the store he'll say "ok, let's go home now"
We were at a friends house Saturday night and he was with the kids while I was hanging with the adults and came to me fine, but wanted to go home. Then I get him to do something else and he's fine.
The funny thing is sometimes when it is time to go home then he gets mad bc he doesn't want to go home then bc he's having too much fun. Chat Icon

Maybe he's bored or tired and this is his way of letting you know?

I get that and I think it's a 5 min boredom or something then suddenly he's fine and doesn't want to go home. Even at the supermarket sometimes. Out of the blue

Re: "I want to go home" when out

Yup, my oldest just started this too in the last couple months. Even if we are home and I say it's time to go out I get "but I just want to stay home!" if we are in the car she asks me if we can stay close to home.
Idk what started it but she usually will drop it and not ask again. But on the days she's adamant about going home she will throw an all out tantrum and I usually end up going home lol

He could also be testing to see how much control he has over the situation. I only have a 15 month old, but what you're describing doesn't sound too unusual.

My nephew is like that (he's 4 as well). Just out of nowhere it gets to a certain point that he wants to go home. I think he just likes his house. Even when he is at his Grandma's house (who he loves and the house is like his second home), he will still want to go home. I think he likes his house and room but I also think he likes to spend some alone time with his mom too (she works full time).

My 2 yo DS says 'going home?' in the car, pretty much anytime we get in it. We say no, we're going to the store and it diverts his attention enough for 2 seconds. Then it's back to 'going home?'

I'd say he's just bored with the situation or testing you to see how much control he has

I wouldn't be too concerned unless he was getting super upset if/when you don't leave right away. But it sounds like he's just being vocal

This is my DS. He just turned three and out of nowhere wants to be home all the time and be "with my family", even when we are all together he will say this. Hes in a lot of activities as of recently and Im wondering if its just alot all at once. He started telling me at tae kwon do that he wants to go home, same with soccer now. Not sure what to do.

My oldest dd loves being home too . She doesn't do it all the time but a lot times she tells me she is ready to go home or she misses home. I don't really read into it too much. Guess she is more of homebody than someone who likes to be out.

Re: "I want to go home" when out

To me that's either just boredom, tired or a control issue. I have a rule that if we go out to eat or to a show, party, etc, I NEVER leave beforehand or when DD asks to leave b/c I feel that sets the wrong example that whenever she is done, we all have to jump for her. And then I think if you do leave when they say that, they become accustomed to parents jumping whenever they feel like doing something different. She does this at shows especially and I always make her wait it out to teach her to be patient and that she doesn't get her way and that sometimes you have to finish what you start. JMO anyway

My DD is the exact same way. She really just loves being at home and her toys. That's her "comfort zone".

She could be having fun somewhere else but at some point, she justs wants to chill out and relax and be in her setting.

She does this on every vacation and basically any time we are out for more than 5-6 hours.

I just distract her and engage her in something else, but I totally get where she is coming from.

Sometimes I just want to go home too.Chat Icon

DD is 4.5 and does this also. Like your DS, not all the time - but definitely does happen. You are not alone!!

Re: "I want to go home" when out

YEs my 4 year old does this from time to time and he definitely doe not like staying in hotels or anywhere away from his home. If we stay at a hotel we just distract him in the evening until he falls asleep and forgets where he is - he LOVES his home. Sometimes if we are out for the day and he has had a ton of fun he will just announce that he wants to go home...if we are more or less done anyway we may decide to go home but for example last weekend we wanted to go out to eat afterwards so we just ignore his request to go home and he ended up going with the flow.

I think some kids like the comfort and safety of their home and being free to play with the their own toys etc...at least that is what my DS is like.

DS is 3 and says this. But from what I gather, he says it when he is tired.

YES!!!

My 2 year old.

we were at the beach and he started saying it. I said "not yet, we just got here."

He proceeded to say it, then started backing up all our belongings, handed all of us our clothes and shoes. LOL

at a birthday party, he turned to me and said he wanted to go home.

It happens most often when he is tired. But can randomly be requested too.
