Listen to your gut. If you were ok with it you wouldn't be asking. Your gut won't steer you wrong

This.
I was a daycare mom for almost two years at a facility I loved. Sometimes the teachers/aides' significant others would stop in to either visit their wives/gf's. Most of the teachers were female so to notice a random guy in the room every once in awhile certainly raised eyebrows and made some of us moms nervous. I asked some other parents about it and the head teacher said that if I was uncomfortable with any of them being there, they'd ask him to leave and not participate. That offer alone made me feel more comfortable with their presence.

Thanks ladies! A lot of you have really put the situation in perspective. I am not 100% I will still consider them, but I am not as dead set against it as I was before.

Besides the creepiness or lack of discussed by PPs, some other things that might bother me:

From your account, it didn't seem like this was a normal drop off or pick up time. It sounds like the daycare was allowing a parent to pop in at a random point in the day and linger. This seems potentially disruptive to the routine not just for that dad's son, but the other kids too. Maybe this is a normal practice at daycares, I don't know. If it was I don't think I would like that.

This is actually one of the things I look for in a daycare-- that they let parents visit whenever they want. First, it makes me feel like they have nothing to hide. Second, it makes for a more community centered place- if parents and family are welcome in the daycare. It isn't like this is a "school" where kids are sitting down learning, and the parents would be interrupting-- rather, the kids are playing and parents are free to drop by and enjoy their kiddos as they see fit.

I wouldn't take my kid to a place that didn't allow me to visit whenever I wanted.

Would totally NOT be ok. I had something a little similar happen with DD and I pulled her right out of the place. It made me very uneasy.

I would not be ok with this. The only people who should be playing with my kid are the workers. As pp said if the dad wanted to hang out with the kid then the kid should not be at daycare.

DS' daycare doesn't even allow parents/caregivers to linger around the center -- at pick-up or drop-off. So yeah -- I think you're right to be weirded out by this.

I also worry about their reasoning. Even if the parents are going through a divorce and the man wants to see his son more that's fine. But the staff might not even know the reasons WHY they are going through a divorce or WHY the man isn't able to see his son more. I'm sure the daycare has the best of intentions but still. Shady.

I'd be upset bc then my son would want me to come play and I can't. That kid/dad should have stayed inside.

Inappropriate, and I would bet the Office of Children and Family services would ding them with a violation for that.

If he was there and just playing with his own kid that could be different. On the flip side is it possible he knows the other kids or was he playing with all of them? DS and a friend's DS go to the same daycare. There are times she has picked up/held and held my DS and I have done the same with her DS. If someone from the outside saw this they could think that the daycare was just letting some random pick up other people's babies.

Odds are it is innocent but if you are uncomfortable with it you should go with a different facility.... Or if you really like the facility I would ask them what their policy is on parent visitation and tell them you would be uncomfortable with a stranger being allowed to play with your child.

I am said friend. i agree, sometime parent's and children know each other outside of day care and this is totally acceptable. I actually love that there are other parent's that I know that know my son and talk/play/hug/keep an extra eye on him. I have also become friend's with another parent who actually requested I take a pic of their DD and sent it to them this morning since they drop off earlier. Our day care knows we are friendly and ok with all of this since they have have been told by all of us it is ok.

I definitely fuss over the other babies in him room cause I seem them everyday, but I would only feel comfortable holding, taking a pic of, touching at all (in terms of playing with them with their toys), those that I knew the parents would be ok with. Other wise its just "hi baby so and so" and smiling at them.

BUT... I do find this a little odd and would definitely want a better understanding of the situation.

I would not be ok with a stranger playing with my kid when I think she's safe. Granted we don't know if maybe he knows the kids but I'm sure administration doesn't know what is going on either. I would definitely say something...
