Teachers and pumping at work
I'm a teacher and obviously will be heading back to work very soon. Right now DD is 3 months and EBF and I really want to try to BF at least until 6 months, possibly longer, but 6months is my main goal. I'm extremely concerned about pumping at school and worried I'm not going to be able to make it work since I don't have regular breaks. I also work at a private school, so that makes it a bit more difficult. My biggest concern is obviously my supply dropping. I've been working on my classroom the past two days and just skipping one session the past two days has already caused a dip in supply! I'm having such anxiety over this! Anyone have any advice?

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I pumped at school with my DS. I spoke to principal and she was fairly supportive. I would wake up early and pump before I went to work. I had a prep first period so I would pull down my shades, put paper over the window on my door and place a do not disturb sign outside ( all okay by administrators) I pumped again on my lunch break. It was very time consuming but it worked.

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I think it will be difficult, but once you set a routine, it will be fine!
I chose not to pump at work (I also teach) because I knew it would add MUCH unneeded stress to my day - and I needed to use my prep/lunch to get stuff done so I could get home ASAP!
Why does working in a private school make it harder for you?

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I'm not a teacher but I pumped as soon as I got in and in my office while having lunch using a handsfree bra. In the beginning I tried to get 3 sessions in to build up my supply. I tapered it down to 2 sessions and eventually 1.

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I'm not a teacher, but pumped at work for three kids. Pump first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed at night to help keep your supply up.
My neighbor is a teacher (hs) and she pumped for her two kids by doing it during her planning period and then her lunch break. She used a hands-free bra and was able to grade papers while she pumped.

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I am a teacher and I always pumped on my lunch break and on my prep period. I wanted 3 pump sessions while I was at work but it never seemed to work out. When I got home I pumped right away to make sure I had enough for the next day.
Its funny how your body will adjust to the schedule.

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I work at a private school too and i am really worried as well. I have no prep while the kids are there (only before they get there and after they leave), and there are always other people in my room. I have to figure this out soon

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I pumped during two preps and sometimes right after school. I found a teaching schedule was perfect becauae I had set times each day. I used a hands free bra so I could gradw or plan while pumping. Talk to your administrator bout your concerns and good luck!

Re: Teachers and pumping at work
I also had to pump at work. I spoke to my principal and she let me use her conference room by her office. I didn't use my classroom because there were so many windows, it would take too long to pull down all the shades. I would pump in the morning before I left, during my prep which was 2nd period and then at lunch. When I was ready to wean, I eliminated pumping during my prep. I quickly got into my routine and it is definitely doable. I know when I work in my classroom I don't want to stop and kinda want to worth straight through the day. That may be the case for you these past few days as you set up your class. The good thing about a teacher;s schedule is that lunch and prep are (usually) at the same time each day. Good luck!
