Tummy Time for Newborn

DD is 12 days old. Poor thing was born with a fractured left clavicle Chat Icon My obgyn actually heard it as he was taking her out. She had her arm up by her face and it happened. It's apparently pretty common.

The pediatrician told me last week that when she turns 2 weeks to start laying her on her tummy while she's awake for up to 12 hours a day!! Chat Icon She's not even awake that long but I have a feeling the dr was trying to hammer in the importance of having her on her tummy.

I'm honestly beyond nervous. Anyone have any experience with a fracture? I thought tummy time is for older babies. I'm assuming I need to be on top of her the entire time correct? I'm terrified of her possibly falling asleep face down. I just can't imagine literally stand over her for what could possibly be hours a day. Any advice? Thanks.

Tummy Time for Newborn

My pediatrician had me start tummy time right away but only for very short periods of time. Each day we did more and more tummy time. My son hated it but I made him do it and he had very good head control very early on so it was worth it!

I never left him alone while he was on his stomach.

12 hrs a day??!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon My babies weren't even awake 12 hrs a day and honestly, they only lasted a couple of minutes at best when it came to tummy time. There is no way they would've done it for hours.

I also didn't start tummy time until between 4-6 weeks old.

Is this recommendation because she broke her clavicle? Even so, 12 hrs??!!

I would start with a few minutes a few times a day. An easy way to start is just to lie down with her on your chest. Did she see an orthopedist? If so, I would see if they have an opinion on the matter but there's no way a newborn is doing 12 hours a day of anything but sleeping!

Yes, it's because she broke her clavicle. I think the dr was exaggerating the number of hours to do it each day just to let me know how important it s to actually do it. Obviously DD is also not awake at this age for 12 hours a day Chat Icon

Tummy Time for Newborn

WOW 12hrs? thats a lot..so every waking min you have to have her on her tummy? I would do as much as you can, it tires them out and mine gets fussy after a few min (I have newborn too). Besides laying on the play mat I also have my DD on my chest when Im laying down & have her lay on me (tummy down) while I talk/sing/read to her.
Hope your baby heals real quick and that she feels better :).

She didn't see an orthopedist per the pediatrician. Thanks for the suggestions. Seems doable and less scary. I've had her on my chest after feeding and she seems ok with that.

Yeah, dr basically wants her on tummy time while she's awake. Based on what you all are saying, it will be short spurts of tummy time. Thanks!!

DD loves Tummy Time. She will actually fall asleep this way. I am always sitting beside her when she does this though.
