Baby Smells like the nanny....

I came home today and my baby girl smells of my nanny's perfume . This is only week #2 with the nanny so I do'nt want to rock the boat, but I hate that she smells like her perfume.

What is a nice and tactful way to tell the nanny to tone back the perfume?

DD is 3.5 months old

Tell her you're allergic and smelled it on her. Tell her how nice it is etc but it gives you hives and itchy eyes ! (hide your perfume in your room first before giving white lie)

I would just be honest and jokingly blame it on being a new mom and a tad neurotic.

I did this with MIL Chat Icon It SCEEEEVES me out when my kids smell like others perfume. there is no reason for it. You don't NEED perfume. Mine don't reek of it anymore but I still smell it b/c she still used the stupid hand cream on her face. Its not a bad smell but I don't like my kids smelling like it. I'd definilty tell the Nanny. Im pretty sure there are rules in daycares about this. I know some medical fields there are.

We actually passed on some nannies who overly doused themselves in perfume, so I know how annoying it can be.

Tell her that you're allergic or that strong smells trigger migraines. (That's actually true for DH)

I would just say that you are sensitive to perfumes yourself and they give you headaches or something and having the baby smell like perfume was giving you a headache. Tell her its not personal, it is just how you have always reacted to perfume.

Baby Smells like the nanny....

Thanks everyone. It was bothering me all night. I would have bathed her but tomorrow is bath night and she does have sensitive skin ( I wouldn't be fully lying) so I didn't want to dry her skin out ( we bath dd every other night).

Wish me luck tomorrow. I hate these types of conversations but I cannot have her smelling like that. It drove me INSANE!!

Funny - my nanny and MIL also both wear perfume and my baby always smells like them when they hold her! I personally just let it go and bathe the kids every night!

I plan baths around when she will babysit. They usually get them in the am but will get them at night. It sceeves me so much. It's like marking territory Chat Icon

This is the person who is taking care of your child. If you can't be honest with her, then it's probably not the appropriate professional relationship with her.

I'd just say, "I love the smell of your perfume but I would prefer if you didn't wear it in our home around our child." Period. End of story. Your child, your house, your rules, your decision.

At least you know she is holding your baby close and taking care of her. lol. I'd just tell her that you would prefer her to not wear perfume around the baby. No need to give her a reason - you are her employer.

have asthma and strong smells bother me, they can be a trigger.

If you want to fudge a little just tell her that strong perfume smells can bother your asthma, and would she please not wear perfume.

I agree with this. Our nanny/sitter doesn't wear perfume so we don't have the same dilemma but when all three DCs come home from my MILs house they smell like her. She doesn't wear a lot of perfume, but I used to get really upset about it and let it bother me but then we recognized how much she must hold them/rock them/cuddle them when they're together. I can drop them off for 30min and they smell like her for the rest of the evening -- she really is efficient with her cuddles!

Re: Baby Smells like the nanny....

I totally agree. Yesterday I knew the baby had fallen asleep on her so I'm sure that is why. But this AM when I got her when she woke up and STILL smelled like her I KNEW I had to say something.

I did talk to her this AM and tell her that DD has very sensitive skin and that I don't wear perfume around her b/c of it so if she can watch what she does as well that would be appreciated. Hopefully that did the trick.

I just want to be $$$$$$ so I can stay home!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you all again for the advice!

Re: Baby Smells like the nanny....

UGH the same thing happened to us...we told her the baby got a rash etc. That worked for a little while but then she started wearing it again. Or now, she'll put it on before leaving if she's going to dinner after work or whatever...and the whole apt smells like her!!

There is nothing worse than your baby's head smelling like another WOMAN!! I completely understand.

It would annoy me too but I probably wouldn't say anything unless the nanny was coming completely doused in perfume. Otherwise, I think it's kind of to be expected if she is caring for and holding your DC all day.
