"throwing" phase

anybody's LO's go through this at some point? DD is 2 and has never had this annoying habit, but the little 1 yr old boy that I babysit 3x a week throws EVERYTHING! No matter where we are, or what it is, he has to throw it. Not at anybody in particular, but lots of times it hits DD or knocks things over on a shelf, etc. Sometimes it even goes up in the air and hits him on top of his own head. It's so irritating cause I don't want anybody getting hurt, but also don't want to keep toys away from him obviously - he needs to play. I just hate this stage he's going through. Anybody with experience in this? Is it just a boy thing? I'm wondering I guess if there's anything I can do to stop it, or if I should just let it slide and hope that this phase passes soon. I usually just tell him "No throwing" and take whatever it is away in the moment, but that doesn't seem to help. He's still little yet - turned one in April and doesn't seem to get things as well as DD did at his age. Chat Icon

Any advice?

Re: "throwing" phase

It could be a stage!

i honestly never saw that type of behavior in the kids i know until my nephew... it was one of the things that made my sister have him tested for autism.

My DS does this and my peditrician never mentioned it was a sign of Autism. In fact, all my research in kids throwing I've never heard of this. Making me quite worried......

My DS throws everything. He is 15 mos and you name it, he throws it. According to my MIL, my DH did this too. My 4.5 year old never threw things as much.

I think its not abnormal, but can def. be very frustrating..lol

Throwing things is not a symptom of autism. It is a normal stage for children learning how to manipulate objects. They are learning what their bodies do and what different objects do when they act upon them. My 1 y.o. DD isn't throwing yet, but she hits (not aggressively), and she currently likes to bang toys on our glass table to hear the noise. I tell her "no" and take the toys away, and she goes and gets another one and smiles at me while doing it. I would just address the throwing behavior by doing hand-over-hand and showing the child how to correctly use the toy.

ETA: Just wanted to further elaborate that throwing things is not a cause for concern about autism on its own. If a child never uses toys appropriately, doesn't make eye contact, doesn't respond to his name, is socially unrelated and the ONLY thing he does with toys is throws them, then I'd be concerned.

Re: "throwing" phase

Yeah, I don't think there's anything 'wrong' with him - at least as far as I can tell. I mean, he responds to me, he just doesn't seem to understand instructions though. When DD was one, I could tell her to stop and she'd stop. This little guy is like "huh?" and then throws it again. lol. He loves playing catch with me and/or DD and with a ball it's obviously more acceptable. But just throwing EVERY LITTLE THING gets soooo frustrating. Maybe it's just a stage since throwing is somewhat new to his growing abilities. I hope he moves on soon though.

ETA - just saw your response, Jax, and I agree that that's probably what it is. He also loves to play on DD's drum set too. I think he's just exploring what he can do. I just wish I could get him to stop the throwing thing. Gonna just continue to address the it every time he does it. Maybe it'll stick eventually.

Re: "throwing" phase

My DS does this and after babysitting for years and working in a daycare, it is very normal behavior from boys especially. They are experimenting. Yes, it can be annoying but I find it is best to give no reaction and just remove the object and distract them into doing something else. Maybe just give him soft toys for now.
ETA... We realized shortly after we taught DS how to throw a ball, that he thought he was supposed to throw all toys...lol! It can be confusing for them at that age.

I didnt mean to scare you! I shouldnt have said it that way! Sorry! I have a lot of younger kids in the family and no one ever threw everything they touched the way he did.

ETA: i should have asked if he actually plays with the toys...

Re: "throwing" phase

I totally think it's a boy phase. Every boy I know has gone through it.

I think it's because as soon as the kid can do ANYTHING the dad or someone else is trying to teach him to throw a ball. Chat Icon

This is said in jest but I really do think it's just a phase.

Re: "throwing" phase

I would have to think it's just a phase. My best friend's dd is 1 1/2 and she loves throwing everything on the floor too. Sometimes she thinks it's a game if you laugh or give a reaction. My other friend's son did this around that age too. He has since grown out of it and he's now 2 1/2
