baptism / Godparent question...
Was I wrong? While I was pregnant my brother had me in tears regularly because he always had to share his anti-children point of view. I even mentioned one time talking about a pending baptism and he flat out said "Don't invite me to anything like that" because he is atheist.
Fast forward DD is 5.5 months and my brother LOVES her. He still says things about children like how they aren't environmentally friendly, they are loud and cry blah blah blah etc, but I can tell he really loves her. I want to baptise her. So I asked my cousin who is religious to be Godmother and my uncle (her father) to be Godfather because I didn't think an atheist is an appropriate choice. My brother is really upset I didn't ask him.
Was I wrong not to ask my brother?

baptism / Godparent question...
I wouldn't have asked him either. IMO it doesn't make sense to have an atheist as a godparent, bc how can they guide the child religiously and teach them the faith if they don't believe in it?

If he flat out said that he didn't even want to be invited then I don't think you're wrong at all.
And if he did say to you that he is upset you didn't pick him to be Godfather, I would remind him of that conversation.

baptism / Godparent question...
Um, how can you be wrong?! An atheist doesn't believe in God at all. Why would he expect to be GODfather?! And added on top of that how he has treated you? Yeah, no, you're not wrong at all!

Re: baptism / Godparent question...
WHAT???? WHY on earth would you make an atheist a Godfather? That makes no sense what so ever. The Godparents are suposed to teach the child how to live the faith, so that would defeat the entire purpose. I don't care how much he loves her, that is not a role he should be placed in.
I'm assuming he has no understanding of the role of a Godparent? It actually has nothing to do with who would take in the child if the parents died, although many people are under the impression that this is what it means.

I agree with everyone else.
If he's that adamant about it and a professed Atheist, it doesn't make sense to make him a godparent. Their role is to help guide the child in the faith. Maybe he is misunderstanding the role of a godparent and what it means.

No, I believe that the person who is your childs godparent should be a person of faith, not necessarily someone who attends church regularly but certainly someone believes in god.

Re: baptism / Godparent question...
No..you are not wrong at all. The role of a godparent is that you know they will help to expose your child to their faith. I don;t believe anyone is obligated to ask anyone to b e a godparent. We asked my sister and her husband to be my DD godparents. We did not ask my hisband's brother because I honestly don't know if and what religion he considers himself and he did not have his own children baptized. If it wasn;t important for his own children, he is not someone I would want standing up for my child. Being asked to be a godparent is an honor and I don't think everyone should get that honor. You did the right thing.

You did the right thing.
We didn't as my BIL for the same reasons, despite my DH initially wanting to do it as an "honor" rather than faith. Happily, we finally decided to ask my cousin instead.

Re: baptism / Godparent question...
I think you did the right thing. Your brother said don't even invite him before she was born.
I don't think an atheist could be a godparent anyway. ?
