Feeding a newborn
Dd is 4.5 weeks old and currently eats every 3 hours during the day and anywhere from 3-5 at night. At night I know it's time to feed bc she wakes up crying but during the day I'm not sure how to gauge her hunger...for example she woke up today just around the 3 hr mark so I picked her up and "played" with her for a few minutes then decided to feed her before she cried. She only are from one breast though and was hungry an hour later. Am I supposed to wait for her to cry before I feed her?? It seems mean to do that but I can't handle feeding hourly.

i am a feed on demand sort of mom..i keep check of the time so i know if its been x amount of hrs since the last time but if 3 hrs has gone by and they r not fussing or sleeping or playing i wait to feed until they become fussy
so basically if she got up and wanted to play i played rather than feed right away

Feeding a newborn
That sounds pretty normal for the age. DD nursed every 2 hours for a while but sometimes it was 1 hour and sometimes she went 3 or 4 hours.
At 6-7 weeks I started doing eat, play, sleep with her so I just fed her whenever she woke from a nap. She eventually stretched from 1 hour awake time to 2 to 3 hours as she got older so her feedings stretched from every 2 hours to every 4 eventually.

Crying is supposedly a late sign of hunger. I watch for DS to root for food. He'll turn his head to the side looking for food, especially if you touch his cheek. Or he begins to suck his hand, and then I know he's hungry.

although i've heard that crying is a late sign, i cant go by that with my 8w old DD. If I try to feed her before she is showing signs (but it is "time" for her to eat) she never takes her normal amount. If i let her get hungry aka crying, sucking on hand, she takes her full amount and goes to the next "scheduled" feeding.
I find that if I go by her every 3 or 4 hours, she gets out of routine and then everything gets thrown off becuase she isnt always hungry.
