Milk protein allergy?

Since Sunday DS has been a little off. He normally has 2-3 BMs a day, the past couple of days he's had as many as 10. A couple of times they were diarrhea (sorry for the TMI). DH brought him to the dr. on Monday and they told us it was a milk allergy and to switch to nutramagin. DS is 4 months and has been on the same formula since he was born (Enfamil). I feel like the doctor didn't even consider any other options. So finally, last night I had DH get the nurtramagin and we switched. Now I'm wondering- how am I supposed to know if its actually the formula change or another factor (when he does get better?). For the most part he's acting himself- eating the same, sleeping normal (maybe even sleeping a little more). Once in awhile a little fussier. Anyone with experience with milk protein allergies- does this sound like it could be it? Or maybe its just a virus? I wish the doctor considered something else. He's going back to the dr. again for his 4 mo check up.

do you know if they tested his poop at the doctor's? That's how the doctor determined that my DD had a milk allergy.

sounds like a virus to me.. my son started right away after bringing him home from the hospital.. just in misery all day.. grunting and pushing... and just fussy and crying all the time.....

at 4 months.. just starting with more poops.. how could they say milk allerty?

did they test poop for blood.. that's the only way to be sure.

How did the dr. determine it was an allergy? did they test the baby's stool? This is what they usually do and this was done for my DS and my DD, both had the milk protein allergy and their stool was retested a few more times on the new formula until there were no signs of an allergy anymore. At first, the stool sample will still show traces of an allergy until the other formula is completely out of their system but within a few weeks they should be clear of it and the test should be negative.

They didn't test his poop! I feel like they're just saying it because they don't know what else it is. We're going back today though.

They didnt test my DDs poop either. They just had me switch formula. I had called though and wasnt in the office. It helped her right away though and she was 3 weeks. I don't think it's. as common for a mp allergy to come about at 4 mo but I know some allergies do come out if nowhere.

My son presented at 4 months!!! No signs (except gas) until 4 months. All of a sudden he was having 8-10 lose BMs per day. Then he began throwing up bottles and the night before he was diagnosed we found blood in his diaper. We took the diaper to the ped and it tested positive (obviously, the blood was visible) but there can also be microscopic blood.

I also thought it was odd to be diagnosed so late but his allergy was slow to progress. We put him on Alimentum and he was a new baby within 10 days.

My ds didn't show signs/get diagnosed with a milk protein allergy until he was 4 months as well. His bm's were normal and then all of a sudden they became frequent, runny, darker and had mucous in them. He was totally fine otherwise.

My dd didn't start to have issues until she was about 4 weeks. They tested her poop it was negative but she has a definite milk intolerance.
The poop test is not 100% accurate, there is no way to truly test for an allergy in an infant that is 100% reliable. Ive done A TON of research into this because they didn't want to change my dd formula because she also had reflux.
Either way when she was on milk based formula she suddenly became fussy, uncomfortable, gas really bad and really smelly, diarrhea 3-4 times daily explosive I might add and again really smelly. She was not sleeping well. I changed formula and had a brand new baby.

Were there any other symptoms? There must be a reason why the Dr thought it was a milk allergy and not a virus...
