Honestly, nothing helped. We tried meds, keeping her upright, cereal in bottle, all the tricks . She'd still spit up 3 hrs after her bottle. I think as she got older it bothered her less. She always gained weight fine. Suddenly, like magic at 12 mos, it just stopped.

Re: btdt - infant reflux moms

Ds was diagnosed with silent reflux around 1 month. He wouldn't spit up but was always arching his back & screaming after eating. He also wanted to eat all the time but small amounts. He was put on baby zantac 3x a day & after a week it started to make a difference. We weaned him down to 2x a day around 4 months. Then 1x a day at 5 months. By 6 months he was off the meds & no problems since.

My LO was dx at about 3-4 weeks. She was going on crying jags after spitting up. Nothing would soothe her. Was constantly nursing. Would arch her back and was spitting up a lot. We started with axid. Initially it worked then we had to start uping the dose every 2 weeks until it just stopped working.

During this time she was also suffering with gas really bad constant diarrhea and days where she was soo fussy and cranky and spitting up after every bottle.

She then began to spit up so violently that it would come out of her nose and mouth and she would lose her breath.

I went to a gi and an ent. Ent was great but i hated the gi. Total waste of time. I felt she was not listening to me and sent my baby for a sono which had me crying.

They switched her meds to nexium, prevacid and something else to no avail for my baby.
Finally i decided it was time to change her formula to a hypoallegenic one (alimentum) & the ped put her on zantac (very mild) and i had a brand new baby! She only had a mild case of reflux but had a milk intolerance which is what was making the reflux symptoms worse.

She is now 7 months and the happiest baby around! No more painful crying no more spitting up every single day. Shes a happy spitter when it happens.

The reason i mentioned the milk intolerance is because if your baby has an intoleramce, the symptoms of it mimic reflux and exacerbate reflux.

Re: btdt - infant reflux moms

My ds was pretty bad for the first few months. He wasn't gaining weight and was pretty tiny. He would spit up fountains and it was like projectile. It could be right after a bottle or two hours later. I would sit him upright. Try to bounce him around as little as possible. Let him work his burps out naturally instead of patting his back. We would go through endless amounts of clothes. He wasn't in pain but nothing would stay down. They had me stop breastfeeding because they said my milk was too thin for him. No formula would stay down except for enfamil AR. He started gaining little by little so the doctor reccommend no medicine. He is 9 months now 20 pounds. He stills spits up every once in a while but not every day and not everytime he eats. He is still on enfamil AR.

dd was diagnosed at 4 weeks and put on zantac which did nothing then switched to axid which wasnt much better. At 6 weeks dd started on alimentum due to a milk protein allergy. The change in formula didn't help the reflux. finally at 12 weeks the ped had us put cereal in the bottles. it did the trick!

DS was diagnosed around 2 months, he was making hiccup sounds and spitting up hours after eating, and a lot. Nothing helped until we used Alimentum, now he spits up very little. We also started solids at 5 months and he rarely spits up now. Good luck!

Re: btdt - infant reflux moms

DS was diagnosed with severe silent reflux at six weeks. He had a scope and the Drs saw his esophogus was very damaged. His symptoms were he was miserable, crying all the time, arching and always wanting to eat as is typical with silent refluxers.

We tried modifying my diet as I was BF, that didn't work then we tried Zantac and that didn't help either. We wound up having to put him on prescription formula. That helped a little but he still reflluxed.

After over a year of this ( he didn't transition to milk well either) I finally sought more natural methods. It was upsetting always medicating him. A friend convinced me that ped. Chiropractic care could help as the spine encases the nervous system which controls everything in our bodies. Well, now I am a believer in chiropractic care! ( I had never been to one myself.)My DS was finally free of reflux after a few months of treatment. I wish I had known earlier. Chiropractors adjust infants and it helps with reflux but Drs don't really advocate for chiropractic care. It worked beautifully for us.

Re: btdt - infant reflux moms

My dd has more of a milk protein issue but minor reflux. Not enough for Zantac because age doesn't cry all day. She spits up out of her nose. It's rare now though. They say it can get better as they become more upright. She is on axid and the ped actually wanted to try her off it last mo. She was doing so well that I wanted to continue another month. She is also on malox which I think helps. She was diagnosed at about 3 weeks.

Re: btdt - infant reflux moms

DS had reflux as a baby. He spit up like CRAZY but, it only occassionally bothered him. When it started to bother him more frequently we tried zantac for a wk but it made him MUCH worse. He grew out of it by the time he was 7-8 mo I think and hasn't had an issue since - he is now 5 and a phenomenal either and has no stomach issues at all - in fact, he's probably only thrown up once or twice since and not since he was 3.

What helped when he was very little was to always keep him upright and stationary for about 20 min after eating and I would avoid all red sauce and tomato based products (I was EBF). I would also never put him flat on his back for the first 3 mos he was always on an incline. Finally, I tried to feed him less but more frequently. HTH!

At his 1 month appt the ped said he had acid reflux and prescribed zantac with an option to change his formula soon.

We didnt discuss going to see a GI - however if for whatever reason I feel she isnt taking this serious and Im not happy with the results - I will go to GI.

Seems to be doing well on it - we will revisit at his 2mnth appt

DD also had a milk protein allergy which was dx first. So, we were on special formula. First she was on Axid and that helped for a little while but then got bad again. So we switched to prevacid (2x a day) and that was the magic bullet. She stayed on the meds until few weeks after her 1st b-day, while we transitioned her to regular milk. Once she came off the meds she was fine, thank God!
