Eating a full hotdog on a bun?
At what age were you comfortable letting your DC eat a full hotdog on a bun?

Age 4. Before that I was cutting the hotdogs up into pieces. When she started school FT in pre-k, they had periodic hotdog lunches, so I went with it and she's been fine ever since.
Eta...this is my 1st kid, I'm sure I was more relaxed with #2.

Thanks. DS is 3 and my DH lets him have a hotdog on a bun. My son eats it, but midway through he takes the hotdog off and just eats it like a cheesestick.
He does fine with it, but it only takes one time...you know? I try to be relaxed about it, but when I see the size pieces my DH cuts up for my DS (they are big), I think what's the difference? I just watch him like a hawk.
I also still cut up his pizza into smaller pieces too because I don't want him choking on the cheese.
I'm trying to decide if I'm still the overly cautious Mom, or if I'm doing the right thing still.

Up until my boys were 5ish I would slice the hot dog length wise down the middle and put it in the bun. I'm neurotic though.

I do this for my DD. Only I just put one half in, but I guess the two halves together isn't bad either.

Really? I am surprised a preschool would give hotdogs to kids.

Not to steal anyone's story, but someone on LIF has a family member that choked to death on a hot dog at age 3. At Disney World.  The story really stuck with me and I remember it often when I'm feeding DD round foods like grapes or string cheese. I'm going to keep cutting up stuff like that until she's way older than 3.

DS is 5 1/2 and I still cut up hot dogs. Mainly because DS usually doesnt want it on a bun. If he does want the bun, I leave it whole. If its on the plate, I cut it up.
That is a beyond awful story about the poor child at Disney.

I remember this story, so sad! and I definitely remember it every time we are at Disney and getting a hot dog from Casey's. I always cut them down the middle lengthwise now, and put it in the bun.

I think around 2 1/2 we started to give ds full hot dogs. We just watch him carefully. Both dh and I are cpr trained in case anything were to happen but he chews everything well so we aren't all that worried. Most of the time he does take it out of the bun and will eat it like a cheese stick and then eat the bun plain too.

4. Like pp mentioned- I leave it whole if he wants it on a bun but if he wants it plain, I cut it lengthwise and then in pieces. I used to remove the skin when he was little.

at 3.5 sometimes we let DD eat it on the bun, depends on her mood. Sometimes she still likes it cut up. But when she eats it on a bun I watch her like a hawk just to be careful. Just like carrots, perfect shape for choking, no matter what age!
